Language Proficiency

Our language proficiency requirement, the equivalent of a one-year college-level study in a language, applies to all students in programs leading to the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and bachelor of science in chemistry degrees.

The University of Denver offers study in many languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish.  Students learn the basics of all four language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and culture.

Our language proficiency requirement entails up to 12-quarter hours, depending on a student’s prior preparation.  Students with no previous language training take the three quarter sequence (12 hours).  Many students test out of all or part of this requirement.  Foreign nationals whose native language is not English, students who pass a placement test to prove proficiency equivalent to the University’s first year of language, and students with language AP scores of at least 3 are exempt from the requirement.  Transfer students with the equivalent of one year of college language will have fulfilled the requirement.  Please refer to www.du.edu/langlit/langprof.htm for a complete listing of language class offerings.
