The Asian Studies Program offers both an undergraduate major and minor.

Asian Studies Major (60 credits)

HISTORY: Choose 2 (8 credits)

• Warring States and Middle Kingdoms
• Contemporary Japan
• Modern Japan

RELIGIOUS STUDIES: Choose 1 (4 credits)

• Religions of China & Japan
• Religions of Tibet
• Hinduism Through Texts
• Modern Hinduism
• Buddhism

ELECTIVES (16 credits)

Elective courses not on the approved list must be approved in advanced by the Program Director.

DISTINCTION IN THE MAJOR

Distinction in the Asian Studies major requires a high GPA and the completion of a special thesis project, as follows.

• You will need to have maintained at least a 3.75 GPA in the major and 3.5 GPA overall by the Spring quarter of your junior year.
• You must be nominated by an Asian Studies faculty member or the Program Director in order to pursue Distinction in the major.
• You will need to identify a faculty member who is willing to supervise a thesis project that goes beyond a normal Asian Studies senior thesis.
• You will need to submit a portfolio of representative work that you have completed in the major.
• Finally, you will need to meet with your thesis advisor and one other Asian Studies faculty member at the end of the quarter in which you plan to graduate. At this meeting, the faculty members will review your portfolio and thesis and vote whether or not to recommend you for Distinction.

DECLARE THE MAJOR

Please make an appointment with Dr. Ginni Ishimatsu, Asian Studies Program Director (303-871-2152). She will help you to sign up as a major, and guide you to an Asian Studies faculty adviser who can give you advice about the best courses to take according to your main interests. You will need to meet each quarter with the program director for approval of courses taken for the major.
