Faculty/Staff

The College is committed to transformation across the arts, humanities and social sciences. The engagement of our diverse people and programs with students, the community and one another is a strength that helps us foster intellectual and creative growth. Recruiting and providing support to well-qualified faculty and staff is one of the most important things we do to ensure the continued success of the University. Explore some ways we do so below.

Funding Opportunities

There are many funding opportunities available at the University of Denver to support faculty and staff professional development, as well as faculty research and course development. Listed below are the funding opportunities provided by the College. Current faculty and staff can learn more and apply via Digication.

  • Book Publication Support

The dean's office has funding available to support costs associated with the publication of books. If faculty members are in the final stages of bringing a book to publication and have exhausted other sources of funding, they may apply for reimbursement for costs directly associated with publication.

  • Creative Arts Materials Fund (CAMF)

The dean's office has funding available to offset the expenses of arts materials for faculty in the creative arts. Faculty may apply for up to $5,000 to cover expenses related to the production of an artistic piece of work, including hiring musicians or others.

  • Data Analytic Technology Award (DATA)

The dean's office has funding available to offset the expenses of software purchases, subscriptions and/or updates for faculty whose professional work requires the use of data analysis software. Priority is given to faculty members who clearly demonstrate the importance of the software for specific teaching, research and scholarly activities.

  • Dean's Award for Excellence (DAFE)

The competitive, donor-funded Dean's Award for Excellence supports tenure-line associate professors working toward promotion to the rank of full professor. Faculty members may apply for awards to be used during their mini-sabbatical or sabbatical year. Awards are limited and chosen by the dean.

  • Dean's Award for Interdisciplinary Studies (DAIS)

The competitive, donor-funded Dean's Award for Interdisciplinary Studies supports interdisciplinary activities related to scholarship, creative activity and/or teaching. Faculty members may apply for up to $5,000. Awards are limited and chosen by the dean.

  • The Center for Innovation in the Liberal and Creative Arts

Aligned with DU IMPACT 2025 and part of the CAHSS Keystone Strategic Plan, the Center for Innovation in the Liberal and Creative Arts is an academic venture capital firm that offers limited course releases, limited funding and administrative support for faculty experimentation through pilot projects, new programs and community initiatives.

  • Marsico Visiting Scholars Program

The Marsico Visiting Scholars Program aims to invigorate undergraduate arts and sciences education by bringing intellectuals, artists and scholars to campus. Marsico Visiting Scholars will engage both students and faculty in a variety of settings — classes, workshops, research projects, seminars, performances, roundtables and meals — all of which will contribute to the intellectual life of the University.

  • Mini-Sabbaticals

The mini-sabbatical provides one quarter release from teaching with full pay with a purpose of providing time away from teaching for research, scholarship and creative activity. Mini-sabbaticals typically occur in the third or fourth year of a new appointment or in the third or fourth year between regular sabbaticals.

  • Professional Development Funds For Staff

The College aims to support staff development and growth, expand cultural awareness and foster productivity and morale. Staff who have worked in the College for a minimum of six months are eligible to apply for up to $1,000 to support most forms of professional development, including web seminars, conference attendance fees, travel for conferences, certifications, etc.

  • Professional Development and Travel Funds For Faculty

Each faculty member in the College receives annual funds for professional development and travel. Professional development is broadly defined to include expenses related to the individual's role as a faculty member (e.g. books, software, computer equipment, professional memberships, travel or research-related expenses).

  • Dean’s Meritorious Sabbatical Award

Each year the dean selects one faculty member to receive a Dean’s Meritorious Sabbatical Award. The award provides faculty research support and helps strengthen the faculty member's research efforts. This award may be combined with any other sabbatical funding that the faculty member receives.

  • Tech Fee Funding

Faculty may request funds to acquire equipment or otherwise implement or enhance technology in their departments and classes. Since the funds come from technology fees paid by students, proposals must involve technology that directly affects students in classes (e.g. use in a lab or studio).

  • Walter Rosenberry Fund

Walter Rosenberry, a longtime friend of the University of Denver, made funds available to the faculty in the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. The Elected Faculty Committee distributes these grants for projects with the theme of "Making Our Work Public." Priority is given to projects with the greatest impact on professional development and the greatest opportunity for public dissemination.
