Requirements for the major in Russian include:
- A minimum of 44 quarter hours of approved courses beyond the elementary level (RUSS 1003)
- Twelve of the 44 quarter hours must be from three 3000-level courses
Students are encouraged to take one literature and culture course in English translation, choosing from RUSS 1416, RUSS 1613, RUSS 1917, RUSS 1922 or RUSS 2116. This course can be used both for the Russian major and to satisfy the Common Curriculum's Analytical Inquiry: Society requirement.
While not required, students who major in Russian are encouraged to study abroad in Russia. Students can also participate in local service learning or internship opportunities. The number of credits earned through these experiences is established by agreement with the Russian faculty and is subject to institutional requirements.

Students are encouraged to study abroad in Russia for the fall quarter of their third year. Studying abroad under the Cherrington Global Scholars Program would significantly increase the number of credits earned during the third year.
