AHSS Committee Descriptions & Representatives

Faculty in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences participate in many divisional and University committees. Both divisions are represented by faculty from each area.

Elected Faculty Committee

The Elected Faculty Committee is composed of four faculty members from each division, as well as the Dean, Associate Dean, and the Budget & Planning Director.  Faculty members serve two-year terms. They advise the dean regarding the agenda for quarterly faculty meetings, the awarding of mini-sabbaticals, distribution of tech fee funds, Rosenberry grants, and divisional student scholarships. This committee meets once or twice per quarter depending upon need.

Graduate Council

The Vice Provost and the Graduate Council are charged with reviewing, formulating, and implementing policy concerning graduate education. Council membership includes the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research, all of the academic deans from units with graduate programs, an elected faculty representative from each division, two elected representatives from the Faculty Senate, and one representative of the Graduate Student Association. Administrators such as the Registrar, the Dean of the Library, the Vice Chancellor for University Technology Services, the Chair of the Undergraduate Council, the Associate Provost for Multicultural Excellence, or the Vice Provost for Internationalization shall be permitted to participate in the Committee's proceedings as voting members whenever any business is transacted that touches upon their responsibilities. The Graduate Council oversees the configuration of graduate degree and certificate programs, monitors the degree to which these programs further the University's mission and avoid unwarranted duplication, and establishes, monitors, and maintains academic standards across the graduate curricula. The Council formulates policies including, but not limited to, the structure and quality of the graduate curricula, procedures concerning graduate student appeals, and policies governing the initiation and termination of graduate degree programs.

The Registrar, Vice Provost of Student Life, and President of AUSA serve as non-voting members. The Council may invite students and other ex-officio members to participate as needed. Elected members serve two-year terms. The Undergraduate Council meets at least once a quarter and votes only on maters of university-wide concern. The Deans rotate chairing the Undergraduate Council and maintaining relevant documentation pertaining to its work.

Faculty Review/Salary (Senate)

The Faculty Review/Salary Committee of the Faculty Senate considers, for review, investigation, evaluation, and report complaints three kinds of complaints by faculty members:

a) Grievances respecting faculty status, working conditions, and appointments; b) Grievances respecting salary allocations, providing that a pattern of inequity extending over at least a two-year period is alleged; c) Grievances respecting reappointment, promotion, tenure or dismissal, if the Provost has recommended in the negative (see Faculty Personnel Guidelines, VI.C.II) and the appellant alleges lack of adequate consideration (Faculty Personnel Guidelines, III.C.5) or violation of academic freedom.  The committee consists of nine members elected by academic units to staggered three-year terms. One member is appointed at large by the Provost for a three-year term.  As many as three additional members may be appointed by the Senate Executive Committee for a one-year term in order to achieve diversity on the Committee and rectify perceived under representation. One member may be appointed by the Senate President for the hearing of a single case, if the appellant's academic unit is not currently represented on the Committee. The appointment must be made from that academic unit, at the request of the appellant. For the business of the Committee, any seven members shall constitute a quorum.

Graduate Academic Exceptions Committee

The purpose of the committee is to review graduate student petitions from all units.  Common petitions are for extensions of time to complete degrees, late adds/drops of courses, problems with transcripts/credit hour enrollment, and other complications that may arise during a graduate student's progress through their program. Members of the committee bring their experience as graduate advisors, faculty mentors, instructors, and knowledge of their program and internal procedures to the group.

There are 4 voting faculty members on this committee: GSSW, MCE, SECS, and AHSS.  The Vice Provost for Graduate Studies is nominally the Chair of the group and votes in the event of a tie or complicated decision.
