Bernadette Marie Calafell

Interests:

Prior to coming to DU she was a faculty member for three years at Syracuse University. She received her Ph.D. in Communication Studies with a focus on queer Latina/o performance at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also received a B.A. and M.A. from the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University.

Her research focuses on issues of Latina/o and Chicana/o representation, performance, and identity. She is author of the book Latina/o Communication Studies: Theorizing Performance, which is the recipient of the 2009 Lilla Heston Award from the National Communication Association.  Additionally, her research has been published in Critical Studies in Media Communication, Text and Performance Quarterly, Communication, Culture and Critique, Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, The Communication Review, and Cultural Studies Critical Methodologies.
