English at DU

The English Department at the University of Denver prepares students to be independent and enlightened readers and writers. Our English majors acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to think creatively and communicate effectively in a variety fields and professions.

Here at DU, you'll find that studying English will take you in new directions.

Work With Innovative Faculty

Our faculty includes writers, critics, and scholars who regularly publish with the best journals and presses. They come to DU from around the world to work with our students.

Get Personal Attention

Classes rarely include more than 15 students. English majors have the chance to work one-on-one with some of the best writers and literary scholars in the country.

Explore and Create

We believe the study of literature can lead to exciting discoveries about our deepest ideas and values.  Our students learn to think imaginatively and develop the kind of creative abilities that will allow them to grow and flourish as individuals.

Liberal Arts Advantage

The Liberal Arts Advantage (LAA) is a program supporting Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences students by enriching their intellectual life beyond the classroom. Its primary goal is to welcome and engage AHSS students into the liberal arts intellectual community by articulating the value of a liberal arts education. It does this in three main ways:

  • It hosts programs and invites students to attend.
  • It assists students in transitioning their liberal arts degrees into careers.
  • It serves as a transitional advising area for students who are between advisers or have unique academic circumstances

Creative Writing

Poets and Writers recently ranked our program the number one creative writing PhD in the country.
