Undergraduates studying communication in the Department of Human Communication Studies are offered an exciting window into the role that communication plays in the human condition. That is, we are committed to the notions that communication plays a crucial role in shaping the world around us and that, as a result, the way that we communicate can contribute to they type of world we wish to live in. Thus, our courses are committed to exploring role of communication in fostering high quality human relationships in interpersonal, cultural, and public contexts.
While our faculty share this common commitment to the role of communication in creating the world around us, the expertise that we offer in our courses speaks to the broad range of human experience. So, for example, our students are able to take courses regarding the role of communication in families, gender, cultural identities and performances, health, organizations, social movements, processes of deliberation, and ethics, to name a few. In short, the topics we cover in our courses represent a wide range of interest, speaking to important issues that we all face in our personal and professional lives.
This range is attractive to our majors, who in preparing for their futures face a world where they can expect to change careers several times over but know that, no matter what career they choose, they will have to communicate in order to be successful. Studying human communication offers excellent preparation for students interested in careers in law, politics, business, health, non-profits, the arts, and many more. And our students know, too, that their ability to understand communication will have a profound influence on the quality of their lives beyond their careers at the same time!
