Artist Diploma in Orchestral Studies

  1. Preliminary DVD (solo repertoire and orchestral excerpts of the candidate's choosing)
  2. If invited, a successful live mini-recital at Lamont (orchestral audition solo repertoire and assigned orchestral excerpts)

Live Audition Solo Repertoire and Orchestral Excerpts 

The Artist Diploma in Orchestral studies is offered in Bass, Bassoon, Cello, Clarinet, Flute, Horn, Oboe, Percussion, Viola and Violin. Listed below are the live audition requirements for each of these.

Bass

  1. One Standard Bass concerto or sonata
  2. Five standard excerpts selected from the following list
    • Beethoven: Symphony No. 5, 3rd movement
    • Beethoven: Symphony No. 7, 1st movement
    • Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, last movement (not the Recitative or Ode to Joy theme)
    • Brahms: Symphony No. 1, 1st or 4th movements
    • Brahms: Symphony No. 2, 1st or 4th movements
    • Mozart: Symphony No. 35, 1st or 4th movements
    • Mozart: Symphony No. 39, 1st or 4th movements
    • Mozart: Symphony No. 40, 1st or 4th movements
    • Strauss: Don Juan
    • Strauss
    • Ein Heldenleben

Bassoon

  1. A solo piece of your choice
  2. Three standard orchestral excerpts of your choice

Cello

  1. A solo piece of your choice
  2. Three standard orchestral excerpts of your choice

Clarinet

  1. One standard concerto of your choice
  2. Five standard orchestral excerpts of your choice

Flute

  1. A solo piece of your choice
  2. Three standard orchestral excerpts of your choice

Horn

  1. A solo piece of your choice
  2. Three standard orchestral excerpts of your choice

Oboe

  1. A solo piece of your choice
  2. Three standard orchestral excerpts of your choice

Percussion

  1. A solo piece of your choice
  2. Three standard orchestral excerpts of your choice

Viola

  1. Three octave major and minor scales
  2. Three octave arpeggio series (Flesch system or equivalent)
  3. Two contrasting movements of an unaccompanied Bach (Suites, Sontas, or Partitas)
  4. A movement of a sonata or concerto, minimum difficulty level of Walton Concerto, Brahms Sonata Opus 120 or Schubert Arpeggione Sonata
  5. The five following excerpts:
    • Strauss Don Juan (beginning in D)
    • Beethoven Symphony No. 5, 2nd and 3rd movements
    • Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, 1st movement No. 15-17
    • Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture
    • Mendelssohn Midsummer Night's Dream: Scherzo

Violin

  1. First movement of a major violin concerto
  2. Two contrasting movements of solo Bach
  3. Three standard orchestral excerpts
