Frequently Asked Questions
- Does Lamont require the GRE?
The GRE is not required for our Masters in Performance (MM) degrees. It is only required for those applying to our Master of Arts in Music (MA) programs in Musicology and Music Theory.
- What if I would like to meet with a professor?
At Lamont, we truly value the student teacher relationship. This is why we keep our student to faculty ratio at close to 5:1. As such, we think it is essential to get to know the faculty with whom you will most likely spend a lot of time with. When you call to schedule your visit, please be sure to mention that you would like to get together with your particular faculty member. We will be happy to provide contact information for that person, so you can set up a time to work together while you are in town. Or feel free to visit our faculty website.
- What's the difference between BM and BA in music?
The Bachelor of Music (BM), is a performance degree and as such, 2/3 of your classes will be at the Music school. The Bachelor of Arts (BA), is designed for more advanced studies in the liberal arts. 1/3 of your classes will be in music. A minor is required and a double major encouraged in the BA program. I invite you to visit our programs (link) page for more specific information.
- What different ensembles does Lamont offer?
- Because we limit the number of students we admit each year, and only admit the number of students we need to populate our ensembles, all Lamont students enjoy a wealth of performance time. We have large ensembles: orchestra, opera, choirs, wind ensemble. We also offer chamber music in every area of study, including a dozen combos within our jazz program.
- What do I need to do to apply to Lamont?

- How big is the music school?
The Lamont School of Music has 300 students total. That is graduate and undergraduate. We keep our numbers right at 300, in order to provide numerous performance opportunities for our students. This also allows the student teacher relationship the time necessary to grow.
About how many of each instrument are admitted each year?
The number of admitted students in a particular area depends on the amount of studio space available for that particular year. If a studio has no availability, we will simply not audition in that area for entrance into the following fall.
- What does a typical audition day look like?
- A typical audition date at Lamont is NOT your typical audition day! You will be greeted by any number of our students or admissions representatives. There will be food and drink available for you and anyone else who accompanies you. You will be invited to warm up in our beautiful practice rooms and audition in rooms that were acoustically designed for your particular area of study.
- Is the audition the same for minors?
- This in large part depends on the area of study. To audition for a minor, you will simply need to contact the facility in your particular area of study and schedule a one on one audition once you're enrolled at DU. Minor auditions typically take place during the first week of classes. For a listing of our faculty and their contact information please visit our Faculty Page.
- Can you tell me how financial assistance I'm likely to receive?
- You will receive a Financial Aid Notification (FAN) sometime after your admission letter from Lamont notifying you of your audition results. Typically this information is sent out from the University of Denver in mid-March. This letter will contain all of your awards, both merit and need based. You will not see need based awards on your FAN, if you have not filed your FAFSA.

- All students who are audition and apply to Lamont are automatically considered for Music Scholarship. Music Scholarships range from $1,000 to full tuition. Successful candidates will not receive notification of amounts until after March 15th, and any offer you receive is binding until May 1st.
