Background:

Carol Jickling Lens began her carillon study with Beverly Buchanan at Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1966. In 1971 she continued her studies at the University of Michigan with Hudson Ladd. From 1972 to 1974 Carol attended the Netherlands Carillon School in Amersfoort where she studied with Leen't Hart and received both the Practical and End Diplomas. While in the Netherlands she played many recitals, including a series of four at the Palace in Amsterdam. Upon returning to the U.S. she continued her studies at the University of Michigan.  

Interests:

Carol and her family were residents of Houston,Texas 5 times, where she was the Assistant Carillonneur, then Carillonneur at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church on and off from 1979-93 and  Carillonneur at the Bell Tower Center Carillon from 1997-99.  They also lived in England (2 1/2 times), where she learned the art of English change ringing, played recitals at the Loughborough Memorial Carillon and regularly on the Old Bond Street Carillon, including a recital where Princess Margaret dedicated a plaque.  Other moves took them to Ghana, New Orleans and Denver where Carol was in on the initial planning meetings for the Williams Carillon.  Their latest adventure had them in Tripoli, Libya up until Dec 1, 2009. They are now back happily residing in Denver.

      Carol has played guest recitals in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Washington, including Princeton, University of  Illinois and University of Michigan. In addition to recitals in the Netherlands and England, Carol has had the fortune to play in St. Petersburg, Russia and at a university outside of Seoul, S. Korea.
      Carol has been a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America since 1971 and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1996, serving one 4 year term. She has been invited to play two GCNA Congress recitals. From 1994 -99 she was Chairperson of the GCNA Examination Committee and currently sits on the Exam Ad Hoc Committee. Carol has also been a piano teacher on three continents for more than 30 years.
      Carol has been appointed carillon faculty at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music in December 2009. The 11th Annual DU Holiday Carillon Concert on Sunday, December 13, 2009 will mark her fist concert as Lamont faculty.
