Proficiency and Placement Exams

2009-2010 GRADUATE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY EXAMS
(Please note that this information is for GRADUATE students. Information regarding undergraduate placement tests may be found below.)

Exam Policies and Procedures:

1. Exams are offered twice per quarter, usually about three weeks into the quarter and three weeks from the end.
2. Students should contact Arianna Nowakowski, at anowakow@du.edu, or 303-871-2662, to register for the exam. Please provide the name of the graduate program in which you are enrolled and indicate the language in which you would like to test. Early registration is appreciated!
3. The fee for a group exam is $35, cash only, which must be paid on the day of the exam. Results will not be released if the fee is not paid.
4. Students have 2.5 hours to complete the exam; extra time can be arranged through CTL for students with documented disabilities.
5. One dictionary and one verb book may be used during the exam. No grammar books, electronic devices, etc. may be used.
6. Graders have a maximum of three weeks to grade and return the exams, at which point an e-mail containing the results will be sent to each student. Additionally, a printed letter will be sent to students' home addresses and to their program coordinator (if the coordinator has elected to receive paper copies).
7. The identities of graders will NOT be disclosed. Students are welcome to come to the Languages and Literatures Department (Sturm 391) to look over their exam, but the exam may not be taken out of the department. Grading results are final. 
8. Students must take the language proficiency exam AT LEAST two quarters prior to their anticipated graduation date
9. Students may only test once per academic quarter.
10. The exam may only be taken three times, after which point the student must take a 3000 level course and pass with a B or better.
11. Individual exams may be scheduled, on a VERY limited basis and in extreme cases only, for a $50 fee.

Please note that no exams will be offered over the summer, and that individual exams may not be scheduled for any time during the first three weeks of any quarter.

UNDERGRADUATE LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TESTS
The undergraduate placement test is a fairly short, usually computerized test that is designed to assess a student's language ability for the purpose of placing her or him in the appropriate level class. Computerized tests are available in French, German, and Spanish. A student who wishes to test in another language should contact the main office at (303) 871-2662 for additional information. No dictionary or verb book may be used during this test.
