Requirements for the Major: 44 credit hours after the first (elementary) year to be
chosen in consultation with German faculty.
Requirements for the Minor: 24 credit hours after the first (elementary) year to be
chosen in consultation with German faculty.
First and Second Year Courses
GERM 1000: Beginning German (GERM 1001, 1002, 1003)
Three quarters of basic grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, introduction to German culture, literature, art.
GERM 2000: Intermediate German (GERM 2001, 2002, 2003)
Three quarters of advanced grammar, conversation and composition, readings of cultural and literary texts.

Usual course of study for German:
- Three quarters of German 1000
- Three quarters of German 2000
- One quarter of Conversation and Composition (GERM 2100)
- Advanced German seminars
Students can begin with the elementary, intermediate and advanced courses at any point
depending on their preparation. The seminars vary and are often taught every other
year. Professors also choose Special Topics in accordance with their own and student
interests.
