His research focuses on the history, memory and representation of war/conflict in literature and film. A current book project, Proper Conduct, centers on postwar Germany under Allied occupation. He is the editor of German Postwar Films. Life and Love in the Ruins (Palgrave, 2008; together with William Rasch) and Bombs Away: Representing the Air War over Europe and Japan (Rodopi, 2006; together with William Rasch) and has published numerous scholarly articles on German intellectual history, literature, and film, as well as American film. Teaching interests include 18th-20th-century German intellectual history, literature and culture, the two World Wars, Nazi- and Postwar Germany, and film.
