Why Political Science?

Political science is often described as the study of who gets what, when, where, how and why.  If you wish to understand more about:

  • how people run for office,
  • how groups influence political institutions,
  • how elected officials behave,
  • why nations choose war or peace,
  • how voters make up their minds,
  • or how governing institutions affect people's lives,

...then this is the major for you.

We also invite students to think about the big questions concerning how we govern ourselves:

  • What is justice?
  • How can we organize ourselves to recognize each other's claims fairly?
  • How do people exercise power?

The major engages students through small classes that require frequent writing exercises to work through principles we are learning, and service learning to engage our communities.

What do Political Science graduates do?

Because we encourage our students to develop broad capabilities in writing and thinking, the major does not limit students to a particular career.  Our graduates have become:

  • reporters
  • campaign consultants
  • speechwriters
  • human rights advocates
  • political organizers
  • teachers
  • software developers
  • entrepreneurs
  • policy analysts
  • attorneys
