Background:
Christine Sheikh, assistant professor, completed her PhD at the University of Arizona in Tucson in 2007. Her primary areas of interest are in religion, race/ethnicity, immigration, gender and culture. Her dissertation examined the relationship between religious and ethnic identities among second-generation Muslim Americans. In particular, she focused on whether participation in religious organizations facilitates the sustenance of strong, salient ethnic identities among the children of immigrants, as the sociology of religion literature claims. She has collected data on various dimensions of ethnic identification, perceptions of gender roles and norms, and respondent thoughts about issues such as Islamophobia and 9/11, which are the foundation for her dissertation and for a future book and articles. |
