How to Apply for a PLUS Loan

Federal Direct PLUS loans are available to both parents of dependent, undergraduate students (also known as a Parent PLUS loan) and to graduate students (also known as a Graduate PLUS loan). Borrowers must be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident, and the student must submit a FAFSA. These loans require a credit check before approval and have a fixed 7.9% interest rate. Additional information about PLUS loans is available by clicking on the links to the right.

To apply for a PLUS loan:

  • Go to www.StudentLoans.gov, click "Sign In" and use your personal information and FAFSA PIN to access your account.
  • Click on "Request a Direct PLUS Loan," select the appropriate loan and complete all 4 steps.
  • When you have finished step 4 and submitted your application, click on "Complete MPN" on the left navigation menu ("MPN" stands for Master Promissory Note). Then, select the loan you're applying for to complete the MPN.

Once you have completed the above process, DU will receive your request within 1-2 business days. If you have any questions about these loans or how to apply for them, please contact us.
