The Nagel Hall Art Collection
Marsha Wooley. Balancing Rock, 2007. Oil on canvas. Nagel Hall Art Collection, University of Denver
We invite you to view original artworks from the Nagel Hall Art Collection, now installed throughout the new Nagel Hall residence building at the University of Denver. The vision for the Collection is to enhance the undergraduate experience through daily exposure to paintings inspired by nature, including landscapes, still lifes and other subjects. Unlike other art placed on campus, these paintings are not particularly accessible to the public, since most are located within the secured residential areas, but several pieces, including the Marsha Wooley painting above, can be seen by non-residents in the lower level cafeteria and lobby areas. We hope they will help make the residential experience memorable for years to come.
A number of the artists included paint in a group called Studio 208, which DU trustee Ralph Nagel co-founded. Most of the painters are based in Colorado; many are inspired by late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century styles, including Impressionism and Cubism. These are styles in which representations of things "as they are" blend with other features—especially the bold use of color—which draw attention to the painted surface itself. A significant number of the paintings were created in the outdoors, in the "plein air" tradition of French and American Impressionist painters.
The Nagel Hall Art Collection is accompanied by a cell phone-based audio tour program, which can be accessed by dialling 303-562-2405. Click here for full details of the cell phone tour and artwork locations. New artists will be added to the tour as recordings become available.
