We have just posted the Bologna Conference Program on the website.

We've done our best to accommodate everyone's requests, so hope there are few disappointments. As for disappointments - we are very disappointed to tell you that Umberto Eco is unable to be the keynote speaker.

Thank you all so very much for your patience and understanding during this process. We are looking forward to meeting you all and working with you in Bologna. Cheers.

Bologna: A Perfect Backdrop

Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna region have long been recognized for a strong commitment to civil society and collaboration. Robert Putnam, in Making Democracy Work, traces civic community and volunteer associations in Bologna and the region of Emilia-Romagna back to 1196. The University of Bologna, the oldest university in the western world, provides an enduring legacy and rich resources for this conference. The Conference will provide an opportunity to re-visit the signing of The Magna Charta of European Universities to celebrate the fifth anniversary of The Observatory.

In addition, Bologna has academic ties and research agreements with Universities in every continent and multilateral agreements with several university consortia in the United States. Hosting the Center’s first major international conference in Bologna allows us to draw upon these extraordinary relationships and welcome participants from around the world.

About the DU/Bologna International Center for Civic Engagement:

The University of Denver and the University of Bologna joined hands in the fall of 2002 to open the DU-Bologna International Center for Civic Engagement. The Center promotes and supports a wide range of activities and experiences for university scholars, students, and community leaders from around the world who are committed to understanding and fostering the role of civic engagement and public outreach in the University. The Center’s mission is to promote international research and activities related to the civic mission of higher education. The Center encourages better understanding of the local, national and international contexts in which universities struggle to define and act upon ideas of the university’s role in civic engagement and public outreach.

We have co-hosted two very successful conferences with the University of Bologna, one in Denver and one in Bologna. Those conferences were primarily for faculty from the two universities and have served to help us understand the context in which an international conference in Bologna can be successful.
