EU-US Atlantis Program: Global Cities and Citizenship

City Square in BolgonaIn 2009—and for the first time in human history—most people on the planet will live in cities.  This turning point presents many problems and challenges.  How can cities manage natural resources so as to make city-living sustainable?  What can they do to expand economic opportunity and foster political inclusion as their populations become more socially and culturally diverse?  What aesthetic values in the design of buildings and public space can help integrate diversity and foster shared civic pride?  In short, what makes for a “good city” in the new Metro Millennium?

The EU-US Atlantis Program seeks to create a joint curriculum between the partner institutions that focuses on the study of the urban, social and cultural transformation of urban areas in Europe and in the United States, in order to promote political and social awareness in the students involved in the mobility.

Bringing together scholars and students to examine global cities, global citizenship and the transformations of urban areas in Europe and the United Stataes, the project includes the exchange of teaching staff and studentsas equally divided between US and European partner institutions who will study abroad.
