Planning for a new site

A fifth Bridge site is being explored at Quigg Newton Housing Development in Northwest Denver.  Progress to date includes:

  • A space has been identified to become the Quigg Newton Bridge Project.
  • Establishment of a resident advisory group of adults and a youth advisory group to assist with designing of the program and involve families.  This was developed through the work of the Center for Civic Engagement at DU who is a partner in this effort.
  • Metro Organizations for People (MOP) has committed to placing an organizer with the neighborhood to work with the development of resident involvement and assure that this voice is strong.
  • Sandy and Rich Laws have committed their company to remodel the site for program use.  In addition the Laws held a garage sale at one of their model homes that raised $25, 000 toward the $100,000 (minimum) needed to consider opening the site.

"Smart-Girl" curriculum offered at three sites

Middle school girls benefit from the addition of the “Smart-Girl” curriculum.  Mandy Jeffries, Bully Prevention Coordinator at Bridge has been trained and is implementing the curriculum within middle schools girls groups at three Bridge sites.

Bridge has a new Program Director

Molly Calhoun, who was formerly the Site Director at Columbine, is now heading up the program at Bridge.

Boy/Cub Scout Programs funded by a new grant

A Hansen Foundation Grant was awarded to Bridge in December 2008 to expand the Boy/Cub Scout program.  Sergio Colmenero will be the full time Scoutmaster to implement the program.  Although Sergio will be missed at Westwood, he will be present though scouting at all the sites.

Bridge appoints two new Site Directors:

Stephanie Lechuga will lead the Westwood team.  She holds an MSW with post graduate experience in Commerce City.

Miranda Cook brings social work experience from Detroit and Kingston, Jamaica to lead Columbine.

Grant funds staff for family outreach programs

Through a grant from the Hedge Funds Association, Bridge has a Family Outreach Staff to meet with families and convene parenting groups to assist with problem solving and connecting people with resources.  We welcome Laura Plas as she develops this exciting program at Bridge.
