Candidate Requirements

Applicant's academic ability, motivation to complete the program, leadership ability, interpersonal skills, career performance, and potential are critical elements of the evaluation process.

This program is designed for professionals with the below criteria:

  • Emerging or existing leader seeking professional preparation to increase their effectiveness as a leader in the field of early care and education to promote positive change for children, families, and ECE professionals. Applicant is seeking to expand their own career opportunities and professional goals.
  • A Bachelor's degree
  • At least three years of experience in the field of early care and education
  • The ability to secure release time to attend the five day summer retreat in July (Thursday through Monday) and 10 Friday evening/Saturday all day sessions during the academic year.
  • Candidates can be located in any geographic area of the state of Colorado.

Application Deadline
The application deadline for the 2011-2012 academic year (5th Cohort of Buell Fellows) will be January 10th, 2011.

Please note:

A. All supplemental documents must be uploaded online in conjunction with your online application, including letters of reference. Please be aware that each recommender will not receive their request for an electronic letter of recommendation until the applicant submits their online application (do not wait until the application deadline to submit a complete online application to the University of Denver or contact the program coordinator and notify her when the letters will be submitted)

B. Test scores, including GRE scores, are not a requirement to apply to the Buell Early Childhood Leadership Program. Please skip this portion of the online application.

C. You will see a confirmation page after you have successfully submitted your online application. If you do not see a confirmation page, then you have not submitted your online application. Also, please be at a computer attached to a printer so you can print the confirmation page.

D. You may choose to pay the non-refundable application fee online before you submit your application. However, once you submit your online application you cannot return to pay the fee online. See the Office of Graduate Studies instructions for more information.

*Twenty-four (24) credits completed in Buell may, under certain conditions, be applied toward either the MA or PhD in Educational Administration degrees. Please consider this when deciding between the Graduate Certificate program and Master of Arts program.

Official transcripts
One official transcript is required from every college and university attended. Official transcripts come in a sealed envelope with the signature or seal from the university registrar. Your file will not be reviewed until every official transcript has been received.

Letters of reference
Three letters of reference are required. This includes at least one from a peer and/or supervisor in your current or recent organization.

Personal statement
Submit a three-to-four page personal statement that addresses both of the following questions (The applicant is free to choose a specific format that is appropriate for their personal statement).
1. Briefly describe what you think are the most critical issues facing children today. In light of these issues, please share your experience with creating change that has resulted in positive outcomes for children and families of diverse populations.
2. If you could do one thing that would create the highest value in your current role, what would it be? Describe the barriers and contextual issues that are impeding your progress, as well as the resources and strategies that you could employ to achieve this goal.

Letter of organizational support
Applicants currently employed full-time also will be strongly encouraged to submit a letter of organizational support demonstrating understanding of the commitments to the time requirement, access to organizational data for course activities, and when possible financial support. Questions or concerns regarding this requirement should be directed to the contact person listed below.

Interview
Applicants selected for interviews will be contacted by the Buell Program Coordinator within two months of the application deadline. Interviews for the 4th cohort of fellows will take place during the first week of April, 2010.
