1098-T Tax Information

1098-T Information for 2014

1098-T General Information

Form 1098-T is an IRS (Internal Revenue Service) form provided to students who enroll in classes at the University of Denver. The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (TRA97) established education tax credits for taxpayers. For detailed information regarding these credits, please visit the IRS website or call 1-800-TAX-FORM. IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education and IRS Form 8863, Education Credits are particularly helpful.

Form 1098-T supplies a portion of the information needed by taxpayers to claim the tax credits. By Federal law, this form needs to be mailed to the student by January 31 of each year. In addition, students are able to access the form online and print additional copies as necessary.

Please note that not all of the boxes on the form 1098-T will contain numbers. Federal law requires The University of Denver to report either the amounts paid by students Box 1, or the amounts billed to students Box 2. The University of Denver has elected to report the amounts billed to students Box 2. We report the amounts billed on a calendar year basis. This means that tuition charges billed in December for the following Winter term will be reported in the calendar year they are billed, not the calendar year the classes are actually taken. The University of Denver will also report the amount of financial aid received that the student does not need to repay. This means that loans are not included in the reported financial aid amount. Financial aid will be reported on the 1098-T for the calendar year it is disbursed, not the year it is awarded.

The IRS has instructed universities to reduce the amount of billed charges by any tuition waiver proceeds. If you received any type of tuition waiver during the calendar year, you will see a reduction in the amount of charges reported in Box 2.

The information on the 1098-T in no way represents tax advice from the University. It is the responsibility of the taxpayer to determine eligibility for the credit. Please do not contact The University of Denver regarding your eligibility for educational tax credits.

Social Security Numbers

The University is required to collect your correct social security number (SSN) to file 1098-T information with the IRS. Periodic reviews will be done by the University to check for students without SSNs on file. Those students will be sent requests to submit SSN information online through PioneerWeb or to submit a completed IRS Form W-9S, Request for Student's or Borrower's Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification.

To update your SSN with the University, log into PioneerWeb, go to the Student tab, and click on Update Social Security/Taxpayer ID Number under Student Information.

Alternatively, you can complete and submit Form W-9S, which can be found on the IRS website, http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9s.pdf. Completed forms should be delivered to the Bursar's Office. Forms can be delivered in person, mailed via USPS, or faxed to 303-871-4401.
