Q. What is the 1098-T form?

The University of Denver is required to issue the Form 1098-T to assist taxpayers in determining the amount qualified tuition and related expenses for which an educational tax crdit is allowable.

Q. Why did I get a 1098-T form?

Form 1098-T is sent each year to those students who had tuition and fee charges in the preceding calendar year and may be used in income tax filings.

Q. What are Educational Tax Credits?

Educational Tax Credits were created as a result of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. For detailed information access IRS Publication 970, "Tax Benefits for Education." This publication is available at www.irs.gov

Q. Can DU tell me if I qualify for an educational tax credit?

No. University personnel cannot assist you with tax questions. The 1098-T form should not be considered as tax opinion or advice. Please consult Publication 970 or your tax advisor.

Q. Why didn't I get a 1098-T form?

  1. You may not have had a valid address on January 1, 2012.
  2. You did not have any qualified educational charges on your account during the 2011 tax year.
  3. If you elected to recieve your form electronically, no form was mailed.

Q. Why is Box 1 blank?

An institution may choose to report either payments received (box 1) or amounts billed (box 2) for qualified education expenses. The University reports amounts billed for qualified tuition (box 2); however, the amount in box 2 of Form 1098-T may be different than what you actually paid. When figuring for education tax benefits purposes, use only the amounts you paid out-of-pocket in that tax year.

Yes! Log into webCentral

  1. Select the myWeb tab
  2. Select Banner Self-Service
  3. Go to Student and Financial Aid
  4. Select Student Account
  5. Go to the Tax Notification menu item
  6. Select a Tax Year and click submit

Q. Where was my 1098-Tform mailed?

If you elected to received your form electronically, the form was sent to your preferred email address and to your ecoBill address.
If you did not elect for electronic delivery your form was mailed to the mailing address that was active in the system as of January 1, 2012. The online copy of the form shows the address used to mail your form.

Q. I received my 1098-T via email and I don't know my password.

The password is the same one you use to view your ecoBill. If you have forgotten your password, go to the Student tab on webCentral and choose the ecoBill Account Management link. Once on the ecoBill page chose the ‘Email My Password’ button.

Q. Can I get another copy of my 1098-T?

Yes! Log into webCentral

  1. Select the myWeb tab
  2. Select Banner Self-Service
  3. Go to Student and Financial Aid
  4. Select Student Account
  5. Go to the Tax Notification menu item
  6. Select a Tax Year and click submit
  7. Print a copy from your browser

Q. Why is the Student SSN box blank?

You have not furnished an SSN to the University.

Q. The 1098-T form is for tax year 2011; why does it include amounts for the 2012 Winter quarter?

According the IRS charges billed in one tax year for a term beginning in the first three months of the next year should be included reported in the year the charges were billed. Charges for Winter Quarter 2012 were billed in December of 2011.

Q. Why are Boxes 3 and 10 blank?

These boxes are not applicable. Box 3 would only be checked if the University had reported amounts paid in previous tax years. Box 10does not have information because the University is not an insurer.

Q. What does an amount in Box 4 mean?

Box 4 shows refunds during the current tax year for billed qualified tuition and related expenses reported on a 1098-T for a previous tax year.

Q. What does an amount Box 5 mean?

Box 5 shows the net amount of certain forms of educational assistance applied to your student account during the tax year. Generally the amount includes scholarships and grants.

Q. What does an amount in Box 6 mean?

Box 6 shows an amount if scholarships and grants previously report on a 1098-T were adjusted during the current tax year.

Q. Do I submit the 1098-T form with my tax return?

Taxpayers are not required to submit the 1098-T with your return. This document should be kept with your personal records.

No. You must provide your preparer with a copy of the form.
