ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATIONS ON CAMPUS

Tragedies such as the recent shooting at Northern Illinois University, and last spring at Virginia Tech, are a sobering reminder that we should all be prepared in case the unthinkable should happen to members of our community, or on the University of Denver campus. For this reason, the Chancellor, Provost, senior staff, and members of the Administrative Council have decided to provide training to students, faculty, and staff that will prepare you to respond effectively in an emergency situation involving an active shooter on the DU campus.

Safety is the concern of us all, and so we ask that you step forward and complete this training as soon as possible. The training is available online at:

http://www.du.edu/campus-safety/active/player.html [12 minute web presentation]

We encourage you to contact any University administrator or the resources listed below if you feel it will be helpful. We also ask that you speak with the students in your classrooms, offices, and work units to ensure that they are aware of the resources and systems for emergency response that are in place at the University of Denver.

We remind you that the following resources are available to assist you with any feelings of distress:

  1. DU Campus Safety (303-871-2334)

  2. Student Life (303-871-4720)

  3. Health and Counseling (303-871-2205)

Students may display any number of warning signs when they are in personal or academic distress. The Students of Concern (SOC) Report is facilitated by the Office of the Assistant Provost and his/her designee. The confidentiality of the report is based on the content of what is being reported. Faculty, staff, parents and other students who are concerned about a student or desire consultation or assistance in making a referral are encouraged to use the SOC reporting system as a resource.

The Students of Concern (SOC) Report is available online at: http://www.du.edu/studentlife/concern/

University leaders and safety officers have planned in advance for a wide range of emergencies. The University-wide Critical Incident Management Plan (CIMP) guides response to a wide range of emergency situations.

The full Critical Incident Management Plan (CIMP) is available online at: http://www.du.edu/risk/CriticalIncident.html

Our campus safety officers, in particular, are extensively trained and have well-established procedures in place to address any instances of violence. We also have mutual aid agreements with regional law enforcement agencies, who would quickly assist us if additional personnel were needed.

In an emergency, we would use a range of communication tools to reach our campus community including building-to-building announcements, phone callouts, e-mail, website postings, radio and other mass media, and outreach to key staff including building managers, housing staff, etc. You can help us to make sure these channels are effective by visiting webCentral and updating your emergency contact information. It is important that we know your main phone numbers, including cell phones, in case we need to do an emergency callout.

Update emergency contact information online at: http://www.du.edu/risk/cins.html

A safe, secure campus will always be a priority for the University of Denver. We seek your help in addressing potential tragedies before they happen by being aware, informing yourself using the resources provided here, and intervening when you see warning signs or disturbed behavior.
