Though still a work in progress, today's American public health initiatives have their roots in the work of America's founders. Living in an era when sickness was rampant and mortality rates were shockingly high, George and Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John and Abigail Adams and Thomas Jefferson all suffered disproportionate levels of illness and loss, making them especially sensitive to health issues. This salon will focus a lens on their lives through this often overlooked theme. They exhibited surprisingly forward-thinking ideas about preventative medicine and medical treatment. We will discuss how they recognized early on that government had a compelling responsibility to ensure both the public's health and the health of individuals.

"Our Civil War: Jewish Men and Women During America's Greatest Conflict"
The Fourteenth Annual Professor John C. Livingston Memorial Lecture in American Jewish History was presented on February 17, 2013 by Dr. Adam Mendelsohn. Dr. Mendelsohn reassed the importance of the Civil War for the American Jewish community, arguing that the greatest impact by Jews came beyond the Battlefield through the contribution of Jewish women and the Jewish entrepreneurs who provided hundreds of thousands of uniforms for both armies. Additionally, Mendelsohn will examine General Grant's order expelling all Jews from the territory under his command, which President Lincoln reversed, and how it encouraged the nascent American Jewish Community to take an increasingly active role in the American political process.

Congratulations to CJS's Sari Havis on her work to open a new chapter of the National Honor Society for students of Hebrew to DU, Eber— or Εβερ!
The new chapter is welcoming eight new members (pictured above). The initiated students have exhibited linguistic commitment and academic excellence not only in Hebrew but also in their general studies, and they plan to use the chapter and their membership as a venue to enhance their Hebrew interaction and to further engage in its culture.
