Hollywood and Jerusalem:Tales of Jewish Migration

Tuesday, April 17, 2007 from 3-6 P.M. and
Wednesday, April 18, 2007 from 4-6 P.M.

University of Denver, Multi-purpose Rm# 3430
Daniel L. Ritchie Center, 3rd Floor
2201 E. Asbury Ave., Denver

Join Stuart Schoffman for a series of seminars that look at Hollywood and Jerusalem as more than mere places. Both are magnets for Jewish migration; both are metaphors of modern Jewish self-transformation, of finding a place in the sun. Stuart will compare and contract American Jewish writers of Hollywood, like John Howard Lawson and Ben Hecht with American Jewish writers Warder Cresson and Rabbi Judah Magnes who immigrated to Israel before 1948. The final part of this unique series will examine the contemporary American Jewish experience in Israel, drawing on Stuart's own person experience as an "Anglo-Saxon" in Israel.

Stuart Schoffman has lived in Jerusalem since 1988, and writes and lectures widely on politics, religion and culture. He has been a columnist and associate editor at the Jerusalem Report since the magazines inception in 1990. He is a research fellow in advanced Judaic studies at the Shalom Hartman Institute, and teaches film at the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School in Jerusalem.

Born in Brooklyn, Schoffman received his B.A. from Harvard, and an M.Phil. in American history from Yale. He worked as a reporter for Fortune magazine, a staff writer at Time, an editor at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and a Hollywood screenwriter. He has taught at the Claremont Colleges, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television, Tel Aviv University, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His film credits include a Texas true-crime story and a drama for Israel Television about Hebrew-language pioneer Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. He also served as a consultant to the joint Israeli-Palestinian production of Sesame Street.

In May 2003, as a member of the Memory for Peace association, Schoffman journeyed together with 250 Arab and Jewish citizens of Israel to Auschwitz-Birkenau. In 2005, he was a fellow of the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. In August 2006, he served on the faculty of the International Summer School on Religion and Public Life in Bosnia.
