We are happy to announce a $1000 undergraduate student scholarship is now available for Fall 2009!
A University budget review has identified funds for a single, one-time $1000 scholarship for a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and/or Transgender undergraduate student. The monies were originally part a larger grant from the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado in the past, but were not able to be successfully awarded. Therefore, we are happy to complete this generous gift now by offering the award to a deserving DU student.
To be considered, students must:
1. be a full-time undergraduate student
2. have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
3. have some unmet financial need (per DU Office of Financial Aid; see below)
4. be enrolled in a DU course/degree program for Fall 2009 quarter
5. agree to complete at least 40 hours of community service during the fall quarter
These criteria are stipulations of the original gift, and/or protect the recipient from loss of other financial aid in lieu of this grant. (Because aid packages have already been assigned for this fall, this additional award would likely replace some other award [no net gain], unless you have some unmet need this could be added to cover.)
TO APPLY
Students meeting above criteria should complete and submit the online application NO LATER THAN 8:00am MST on Tuesday, 1 September 2009. In addition to your contact information and agreement to the criteria above, you will be asked to respond to the following question:
In 500 words or less, please describe the 40 hour min. community service project you are proposing to participate in and/or implement. While you do not need to create a new initiative, preference will be give for efforts that contribute to a more positive climate for LGBTQ and Allied peoples, and/or increase equity for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. Proposals will be evaluated on feasibility (how likely is success?), positive impact (will it make a difference?) and creativity (how does it express your interests?).
We suggest pre-typing your response in your word processing software, checking wordcount and spellcheck, and then copying/pasting it into the application.
All applicants will be notified of the award decision via email by 5pm on Friday, 4 September 2009.
Please note that:
* Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
* By submitting an application, student authorises CME staff to verify GPA, enrollment and financial aid status.
* This is a one-time (non-renewing) $1000.00 award, for Fall 2009, to be applied directly to the recipient's DU student account for payment of school-related costs.
