Center For Multicultural Excellence

Advancing a culture of Inclusive Excellence at DU!

LGBTIQA Programs & Services

Programs & Services | Campus Resources & Organizations | Community Resources & Organizations | Communication | Calendar

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Questioning and Ally (LGBTIQA) communities are a vital part of and contribute significantly to Inclusive Excellence at the University of Denver.  Over the years, these faculty, staff, students and alumns have made tremendous contributions to teaching, research, and community service as well as the overall mission of DU of becoming a great private university dedicated to the public good.  The gifts, talents, background, and diversity that LGBTIQ and Ally people bring to the institution are valuable assets that contribute to the learning and education of all students.  Moreover, these communities are extremely diverse and truly represent a “rainbow” of social dimensions including disability, class, race/ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, age, nationality, religion, and a whole host of other important social identities.

Recognizing and celebrating this presence and these contributions, the Center for Multicultural Excellence offers a variety of programs and services that support and empower our LGBTIQ and Ally communities as they thrive, succeed, and make valuable contributions to DU.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR INPUT!

The LGBTIQA Programs & Services staff want YOUR INPUT to help us focus, justify and garner resources to better serve YOU!  Please take a few moments to give your feedback on the DU CAMPUS Needs Assessment Survey.

This brief survey will provide us a clearer picture of the diversity within and across our LGBTIQ and Ally communities, what works well for us on campus, and where we need to do more work on inclusiveness.  All LGBTIQ and Ally students, faculty and staff are invited to participate.  (Alumns can complete a separate interest survey.)

Programs & Services

Unless otherwise noted, all CME programs, services and events are provided at no cost to participants.  Due to space limitations, advance registration may be required. Please see linked pages and/or contact us for the most up-to-date details.

Queer Course Lists

Each quarter, we compile and publish a list of courses focused on and/or including LGBTIQ and Ally, larger sexual orientation, gender identity/ expression and other related identities.

Instructors, submit your course (term, course #, title, meeting days/times, brief blurb) at lgbtiqa@du.edu.

Queer & Ally ("Q&A") Training
Similar to "SafeZone" programs at various campuses around the nation, Q&A provides 2-3hour interactive workshops to campus organizations, offices and informal groups to increase awareness and inclusion of peoples of all sexual orientations and gender identities/ expressions.  Q&A has been revamped in the past year to be more up-to-date, inclusive of the broad diversity within LGBTIQ and Ally communities, and more flexible in meeting the specific needs of audiences.  We will be offering a Facilitator Training in order to update/ add to our cohort who can roll out the updated program for staff development and 2009-10 open training schedules!  If you are interested in learning more, please contact us.

COMING SOON: Participants who complete Levels 1 & 2 become part of the campus Q&A Network, and are provided a placard for their office/ room, access to a special online resource site, and opportunities for ongoing education and action on equity issues.  Watch for details!

Email Digest (weekly on Fridays)
To help our communities stay informed about campus and community events, issues and opportunities, we compile and email a digest of FYIs each Friday morning to the (umbrella) QueerDUinfo and the QSA student email listservs.  Brief submissions can be emailed to lgbtiqa@du.edu.

Gala Celebration (annual, winter quarter)
This dinner event is an opportunity to celebrate and motivate LGBTIQ and Ally progress at DU by recognizing the accomplishments and work of and on behalf of the DU LGBTIQ and Ally communities.  Annual awards, nominated and selected by the members of the DU communities, are presented, in addition to a review of the past year's equity accomplishments and a reminder of work still needed to be done.  See a list of 2009 honoreesThe 2010 Gala will be Thursday, 18 February; watch for details!

Resource Collection
In addition to a growing collection of LGBTIQ and Ally-related holdings at DU's Penrose Library (watch for quick search links!), the CME also has a number of books, movies and other resources available for check-out to members of the DU community.  Feel free to stop by our office and browse!

Rainbow Know
For 2009-10, we are inaugurating a worklife informational series, connecting our communities with campus, alumn and community experts on LGBTIQ and Ally issues.  These free workshops will focus on such issues as legal issues, financial planning, non-traditional families, relationships, health and wellness, and more.  Watch for details on the full Winter/Spring schedyle, including local attorney Erica Johnson, of Ambler & Keenan, presenting a FREE overview of estate planning, probate and other issues unique to LGBT individuals and families.  Watch for additional details, and/or suggest topics or resource people (contact us)!

Speakers Bureau (under development)
Our office and campus organizations receive regular requests for speakers to visit classes, campus meetings, and community groups, to share their stories growing up, coming out, and working and living as LGBTIQ and Ally people.  We are working to develop a training program and more formal scheduling process.  If you'd like to help or participate, please contact us.

In the meanwhile, if you are interested in having a speaker/panel visit with your gathering, please contact us with specific topic, requested date and time, audience size and description, etc.

Triad Mentoring (under development)
We are working on a program in which new LGBTIQ-identifying students (undergraduate or graduate) are connected to an 'out' continuing student AND an 'out' current faculty/staff member, to provide a three-person connection for assistance with the queer college transition--while also building community!   If you are interested in participating, please contact us.

Social Series
One clear theme in feedback from DU's LGBTIQ and Ally communities is a need for purely social time--opportunities just be together, without a specific task or educational outcome.  Recognizing the importance of this community-building and -maintaining process, we're seeking a few volunteers to help coordinate an ongoing series of low-key, lo/no-cost social activities.  Past events have included a Queer Coffee Hour at Kaladi's, a trip to see Milk at the Mayan Theatre, and a "Viewer's Choice" movie night at Hillel.  If you'd be interested in helping organize one (or more) of these simple socials, please contact us.

Special Event Co-Sponsorships (ongoing)
Our office also works with various campus and community partners to co/sponsor special performances, speakers, etc for the University.  Previous programs have included Mangos with Chili performance, Samuel Lurie transgender training, and SoleJourney movie screening and discussion.  Possible support includes location booking, publicity assistance, event staffing volunteers, financial contributions, etc.  Please contact us with ideas or specific proposals/requests!

Welcome Back BB"Q" (annual, fall quarter)
Each fall, we host a social to welcome new LGBTIQ and Ally members and welcome back returning students, staff and faculty.   In addition to good (and veggie-friendly) grub, we also pause briefly to introduce campus and community resource organization, our Programs & Services, and even one another.  It's a great way to start the new school year by reconnecting with existing and making new friends and connections!  The Fall 2009 BB"Q" was held Tuesday, Sept 22.
