African American Student Services

The Center is pleased to offer three major events in addition to regular advising as part of its African American Student Services: The Gathering, the African American Prospective Graduate Student Institute, and the Annual Reception for the African American Alumni Association. Furthermore, AASS provides support to the Black Student Alliance (BSA) and the African American Alumni Association (A4). Click on the links below for more information.

There are three major events in the academic calendar in the area of African American Student Services (AASS). One such event entitled “the Gathering” is a networking and community building opportunity for African American faculty, staff, students, and alumni.  The Gathering takes place each quarter and has topics of discussion that are facilitated in small groups with a large group discussion to follow outlining action steps for our DU community, specifically.

In the fall of each year, AASS hosts an African American Prospective Graduate Student Institute designed to inform and motivate current undergraduate students to look toward the future and pursue a graduate degree.  The one-day institute will bring undergraduates from Denver Metro area campuses to DU to participate in a fishbowl discussion, workshop sessions (e.g., test preparation, graduate program selection, funding sources), and a keynote luncheon with Dr. Lee Jones, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Professor of Educational Foundations at The University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.

Lastly, in cooperation with the African American Alumni Association (A4) and the Center for African American Policy, AASS hosts the Annual Alumni Reception.  The reception is an opportunity for alums to reconnect with their alma mater and it serves as a showcase for programs and services that benefit the current African American population at DU.  African American Student Services also supports the Black Student Alliance in an advisory capacity.  This relationship allows for co-sponsorship of many programs and events, as well as, serves as a liaison to various resources, on and off campus.

The Black Student Alliance (BSA) promotes diversity within the University of Denver community by providing educational programs and speakers as well as liaisons among the DU community, the African-American Alumni Association and Denver's African-American community. BSA also encourages academic excellence, personal achievement, cultural awareness and recruitment of African-Americans and other minorities.
