Academic Program
University of Denver’s International Studies Professor, Arthur Gilbert, leads a group of graduate and undergraduate students to Costa Rica. This five credit hour program highlights the political, educational, and cultural aspects of Costa Rica and other Central American countries. Professor Gilbert is joined by local professors and experts to present lectures and lead field trips. San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, serves as the home base for the program. Students attend class four days a week, allowing them ample time to discover the country on the weekend. Because of the various topics covered in this intensive course, most students have been able to have it approved for their their area of study. It is advised that you get pre-approval for this course in order for it to go towards your major or minor. Pre-approval credit forms are available in the Study Abroad Office. It must be signed by your academic advisor and returned to the office prior to leaving on the program. The Study Abroad Office will register all accepted students. Once registered, tuition billing will be sent out to the student’s billing address.

Course
Undergraduates are required to take ABRD 3500, while graduate students will be enrolled in ABRD 4500. Due to the nature of this short-term program, students are required to attend all class periods and required field trips and excursions. Extra-curricular activities can be arranged for evening hours and the weekend.

A comprehensive exam will be given on the last day of the program for both undergraduates and graduate students. Graduate students will be required to conduct additional research during their time in Costa Rica that culminates in a final paper and presentation.

Incomplete grades will not be issued for this program. The classroom structure consists of lecture periods and field trips.

Housing
Students will be housed in a class hotel during the week: the Best Western Irazu. Students will share a double room.

Students are free to travel during the weekends.  Therefore, students need to arrange their own housing and meals Friday and Saturday nights. Reservations may be made in-country with the help of our local hosts, the hotel concierge and travel services. Students may stay at the hotel in San Jose provided they pay the additional expenses. Luggage may be stored at the San Jose hotel during the weekend.

Meals
Breakfast and lunch will be served at the hotel during the week. Students are on their own for the evenings and weekend meals. Various restaurants are located within walking distance of the hotel or students can use the hotel restaurant for their evening meals.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Students may be eligible for scholarship aid generated from the tuition payment to this program. Indicating your need for financial aid on the application will serve as your application for this scholarship. This financial aid will be distributed according to need as indicated on the student’s FAFSA form (on file with the Office of Student Financial Services).
