2001: H20: ON THE WAVES OF GLOBAL POLITICS
Held March 3, 2001, at the University of Denver's Sturm Hall
The 2001 World Affairs Challenge explored the complex
subject of water and international relations. Since pre-modern times,
water has been a source of both conflict and cooperation between civilizations.
In the modern state system water has been the focus of negotiations, international
law, treaties, exploration--even war.
The 2001 Challenge investigated how water continues
to be an issue of critical importance in international relations and can
be approached from many different perspectives, incorporating historical,
economic, cultural and environmental aspects. Teams approached these
aspects from an international perspective, focusing on how water affects
inter-state relations and is an issue of importance to many countries.
Some areas explored within this topic were:
-
International negotiations over river water rights/fishing
rights
-
The development of international law in the modern
system based on negotiations over water rights
-
Protection of wetlands
-
The impact of dams and water diversions on local
populations, the environment, or important archeological sites
-
Managing shared resources between countries such
as rivers, lakes, or inland seas
-
Shortage of water and efforts to combat that shortage
-
Desalinization
-
Access to clean drinking water
-
Ownership of the oceans
-
Water pollutions and effects on surrounding countries
-
Floods and flood damage resulting from human development
-
Mining and oil exploration on the ocean floor
-
Canals, straits, and other sea routes important
to world trade
-
Altering the environment--greening the deserts and
draining the swamps
