The LEP Academic Counselor

Academic Counselors are trained, experienced staff members who provide individualized services designed to meet the particular needs of your student throughout the academic year. Each LEP student receives an LEP academic counselor prior to his or her arrival at the University of Denver. Referring to diagnostic testing and your student’s own testimony of strengths, deficit or challenge areas, and learning styles, counselors work with students to accentuate and enhance existing abilities, develop new learning strategies, and address the individual challenges facing your student at college.

The student-academic counselor relationship is generally conducted around a a set of philosophies. One of them is student self-responsibility. To that end, students direct the meetings with their academic counselors. First-year students are encouraged to meet with their academic counselors weekly or bi-weekly. Meetings may include academic support, writing development assistance, time management support and structure, academic advising relating to LD/ADHD, and/or assistance in resolving educational conflicts.

For LEP counselors, the relationship with the student is our primary relationship. LEP academic counselors work hard to build a trusting relationship with each student and challenge every student to achieve new levels of growth while providing the support necessary to reach personal and educational goals.

How LEP counselors support students:

  • Assistance with written and expressive language
  • Developing organizational and learning strategies
  • Instruction on time management
  • Coordination of tutorial support
