Academic Counselors

Academic counselors are trained, experienced staff members who, throughout the academic year, provide individualized services designed to meet the particular needs of you student. Each LEP student received an LEP academic counselor prior to his or her arrival at the University of Denver. Referring to diagnostic testing and the student’s own testimony of strengths, deficit or challenge areas, and learning styles, counselors work with students to accentuate and enhance existing abilities, develop new learning strategies and address the individual challenges facing each student at college.

One of the key philosophies of the LEP is student self-responsibility. To that end, students direct meetings with their academic counselors. First-year students are encouraged to meet with their academic counselors weekly or bi-weekly. Meetings may include academic support, writing development assistance, time management support and structure, academic advising relating to LD/ADHD, and/or assistance in resolving educational conflicts.

For LEP counselors, the relationship with the student is the primary relationship. LEP academic counselors work hard to build a trusting relationship with each student and challenge every student to achieve new levels of growth while providing the support necessary to reach personal and educational goals

How LEP counselors support students:

  • Assistance with written and expressive language
  • Developing organizational and learning strategies
  • Instruction on time management
  • Coordination of tutorial support

Subject Tutors

Discipline-specific tutors (for example: business, English, math and science) are available to LEP students. The LEP tutoring program is on-site, with tutors scheduled to be available throughout the day and into the evening hours. The tutorial staff of the LEP includes adjunct faculty, graduate students, and upper-division students who have demonstrated a solid mastery of their discipline. The tutorial services are included in the LEP fees. For additional information, please see the LEP Tutoring Center website.
