Making the First Appointment
When you first call the counseling center at 303.871.2205, the front desk staff will make an appointment for you for an Initial Consultation. Please tell the front desk staff if you are experiencing an emergency and need to be seen immediately. The counseling center strives to provide services in a timely and consistent manner. However, during peak times of the year (e.g., mid term examinations and finals), it may take longer than a few days to receive an appointment for an initial consultation. Students, faculty, staff, or parents who are concerned about a student or desire consultation or assistance in making a referral are encouraged to call the center.
Initial Consultation
The first appointment is an informational session which usually takes about 90 minutes. Your counselor will clarify and assess your reasons for seeking help and obtain some relevant background information. Clients often find this process comforting despite their initial stress and anxiety, and leave feeling a sense of relief.
During the initial consultation session, the counselor and the client will decide the best course of action to address the client's concerns. This may include, but is not limited to, time-limited individual and/or group counseling, a referral to other services on campus, or a referral to a professional outside of the DU Community if it appears that this would be more helpful and/or appropriate.
