Counseling Services
Let's Talk
The Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is excited to announce a new, free counseling service called Let's Talk. Although the HCC has skilled and knowledgeable counselors ready to help, we realize that coming into the HCC might be a bit intimidating. Let's Talk is a program that provides easy access to informal, confidential or even anonymous consultations with HCC staff counselors. We will have regular, weekly, walk-in hours at the Law School, Driscoll South and in the LEP/DSP space office area. If you have something you need help with, an issue, a question, or if you just want to talk, we're here to listen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Let's Talk
If I go to Let's Talk, won't everyone find out?
No. Let's Talk meetings are confidential and can even be anonymous. This means that anything you say to a consultant will be kept confidential. You may even choose not to give you name or student ID. In these cases the meetings will be anonymous. There are some exceptions to keep in mind, however. Whenever safety is at issue (yours or someone else's), there may be a need to inform other professionals.
What if someone feels suicidal or wants to hurt him/herself? Should he or she go to Let's Talk?
If you are feeling unsafe, you need to talk to someone. Find a good friend or a family member you trust. If you still feel unsafe, you should call Campus Safety at 303-871-3000 and ask to speak to the counselor on call, or call 911. You may also go directly to the Health and Counseling Center (3rd Floor North Ritchie Center) during our normal hours, where you can get immediate help. You may still come to see a Let's Talk consultant, and the consultant can help you decide what will be best for you.
What if someone expresses a desire to hurt other individuals? Is Let's Talk appropriate for them?
Again, whenever there are safety issues it is very important to talk to a professional. Campus Safety should be notified in these situations at 303-871-3000 or you can call 911 in the case of imminent danger. Let's Talk consultants can help you assess these situations, so don't hesitate to bring this info to our attention. You may also use the Health and Counseling Center as a resource in these instances.
What is the time limit on Let's Talk meetings?
There is no specific time limit on meetings with a Let's Talk consultant. The length of the meeting is determined by a couple of things: whether or not anyone else is waiting, and the amount of time you need. If you need more time or have more things to talk about, it may be helpful for you to consider scheduling a meeting with a counselor at the Health and Counseling Center as an alternative. Let's Talk consultants are available in weekly, 2-hour blocks at the Law School, Center for Multicultural Excellence, and Nelson Hall.
Can faculty and staff utilize Let's Talk services?
We will not turn anyone away from a Let's Talk meeting. And if a faculty or staff member had concerns about a student, Let's Talk would be a great starting place to find some help and resources. However, Let's Talk services are primarily for DU students. If you are a faculty or staff member, we can point you in the direction of other services that will be more appropriate and useful for you. Feel free to come in and talk about it.
What about parents? Can they come to Let's Talk?
Again, parents who have questions or concerns for students may use Let's Talk as a starting place for gathering information. However, parents of DU students are not eligible for services at DU for themselves, so a Let's Talk consultant will be happy to point you in a more appropriate and helpful direction.
What if appointments at HCC are booked for weeks out? Can I use Let's Talk instead?
Let's Talk is not meant to take the place of counseling. If you need immediate assistance with a problem or feel you are in crisis, you can always call the HCC at 303-871-2205 and arrange for a crisis session. Crisis sessions at HCC are available every day, and we encourage you to call first before going to the Health and Counseling Center.
I am concerned about my friend. Can I bring my friend to Let's Talk?
Absolutely. A Let's Talk consultant will be able to talk to you with your friend, or talk to your friend alone. After a brief consultation, we will be able to point you and your friend in the right direction to get the help you need.
