General Info
Eligibility
All students enrolled for academic credit (full-time or part-time, undergraduate or graduate) may use the Health and Counseling Center. Students' spouses are also welcome for general medical care. Faculty and Staff are welcome for travel-related immunizations, information, and medications; other immunizations, including flu vaccine; and for EAP (Employee Assistance Program) services through the Counseling Center.
All Undergraduates must pay the Health & Counseling Fee. If you are a graduate student, you may elect to waive the fee. We do not encourage waiving, however, as keeping the fee goes a long way towards reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses and provides convenient access to comprehensive medical care right on campus. Students and students' spouses who have not paid the Fee are always welcome at the Health and Counseling Center on a fee-for-service basis.
The Health and Counseling Center provides services for University of Denver faculty and staff. The EAP (Employee Assistance Program) allows for 5 free visits to the Counseling Center during one fiscal year. Employees pay fee-for-service for other services at the Health and Counseling Center.
A Message from Dr. Sam Alexander
Director, Health & Counseling Center
Dear Student,
Good Health is essential for you to obtain the most benefit from participation in college life. Because the University of Denver recognizes this and desires to safeguard your good health, the University has established and excellent two-part health care program.
First of all, the University maintains an on-campus Health and Counseling Center for regularly enrolled students and their spouses. The Health and Counseling Center provides low-cost medical and mental health services.
Secondly, the University sponsors a Student Health Insurance Plan, which is explained in the Student Health Insurance booklet, available from the Health and Counseling Center and elsewhere on this Web site. The plan is designed to complement the services rendered at the Health and Counseling Center. All students attending the University are required to participate in the Student Health Insurance Plan unless they can present proof of other adequate health insurance. Although students with other health insurance may waive participation in the Student Health Insurance Plan, we strongly encourage careful evaluation of the plan since it may be valuable as supplemental coverage. The plan is especially beneficial to those students who have been removed from their parents' coverage because of attainment of a specific age, marriage, or other reasons. It is also very important for out-of-state students covered by HMO's and PPO's to review their policy for allowable benefits and provider lists in the Denver area.
The staff at the Health and Counseling Center welcomes each of you to the University of Denver. We look forward to assisting you in maintaining good health while you pursue your educational goals.
Best wishes for a healthy academic year,
Sam E. Alexander, MD Executive
Director, Health & Counseling Center
