Urgent/Same Day Care (DU students only!)

What is it and how does it work?

For Mental Health Concerns

See the After Hours tab on this website for mental health emergencies occurring when the Health and Counseling Center is closed.

For Illnesses or Injuries

  • We offer walk-in care for students who need medical attention either immediately or sooner than would be available through a scheduled appointment.
  • If possible, please call ahead. In most instances this will reduce the time you have to wait to be seen.
  • If you call first, a triage nurse will discuss your concerns with you and help determine whether you need to be seen immediately, or if your condition warrants a later appointment the same day or the next.
  • The triage nurse will evaluate those who come in without an appointment.
  • If you don't call in first, you will still be seen. Depending on the urgency of your illness, you may have to wait.
  • After talking to the triage nurse, either in person or on the phone, one of the following options will be made available to you:
    • You may be advised to go to an emergency room;
    • You may be advised to come to the Health and Counseling Center immediately;
    • You may be scheduled to come in to the Health and Counseling Center later the same day;
    • You may be provided with home care instructions and given an appointment for the next day. If your symptoms worsen prior to your appointment, you are encouraged to call us back, or call the after hours line if the Health and Counseling Center is closed.

You should come to Walk-In Care for an Illness or Injury when:

  • You are too sick to make or wait for a same-day appointment or to talk to the triage nurse on the phone.
  • You need immediate medical attention for an acute injury, i.e., cuts, sprains, falls .
