Basic requirements for matriculation are:
• A completed two-year master’s degree relevant to the student’s proposed concentration(s). In special cases if a student is admitted with a master’s degree in a field other than Religious Studies, or the like, the student’s Advisory Committee may require remedial coursework that would not count as part of the student’s program. Such course work would not be covered by financial aid.
• A grade point average from all graduate work of no less than 3.0 (B).
Admission applications are reviewed one time per year and the deadline to have materials submitted is January 1st of each year. Any materials received after the January 1st deadline will be considered late. Please make sure the complete application and all supplemental materials have been received prior to the January 1st deadline.

In addition to the online application, applicants must submit the following supplemental materials:
1. Transcripts:
Applicants are required to submit official transcripts from each post-secondary institution they have attended, or are presently attending, where two quarter hours (or one semester hour) or more, were completed. Applications will not be forwarded to the department for review until official transcripts have been received. The University is not responsible for obtaining an applicant's transcripts, including any record of work completed at the University of Denver or Iliff School of Theology. Applicants must also account for any study undertaken outside the United States.
An official transcript must include the original signature of the registrar and/or the seal of the issuing institution, and must be enclosed in an envelope with the stamp or signature of the registrar across the sealed flap. Proof of a bachelor's and master's degree is required from a regionally accredited college or university. All credentials submitted become property of the University of Denver and cannot be copied or returned to the student or any person(s).
2. Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Graduate Record Examination aptitude scores for general test are required for all applicants. (Note: When reporting scores to the Joint Ph.D. Program, please use institution code #4842 for the University of Denver.)

Applicants should take the entrance exam well in advance of their intended application date. Please allow at least 14 business days for your general test scores to be received. Applications will not be processed until scores have been received. Entrance exam scores older than five years from the date of the application may not be acceptable for admission.
3. Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required from qualified persons, including graduate and/or undergraduate faculty familiar with the applicant’s academic work. Letter of recommendation requests are sent to your recommender via email within one business day of the submission of your online application. You will be asked to provide names and email addresses of individuals who will be writing your recommendations. Please ensure you have accurate email addresses for your recommenders prior to submitting your application. We suggest you let your recommender know the recommendation request will be coming from the University of Denver in advance. This will allow him/her to send a letter electronically and meet the application deadline if applicable. Instructions for an evaluation form will be included in the email.
4. Essay
- A statement of purpose outlining the professional and/or academic goals of the applicant
and
- An essay discussing the applicant’s interest and background in the chosen concentration
(Combined length is typically 3-5 pages)
It is highly recommended to identify specific faculty you wish to work with.
The Essay/Personal Statement can be uploaded and attached to your online application before submission.
5. Research Paper
A research paper or essay that represents the applicant’s best effort in an academic field of study directly related to the proposed field of study. (Length is typically 10-20 pages, not to exceed 25 pages)

6. Application Fee
There is a $60 non-refundable application fee, which covers the cost of processing application materials. The application fee may be paid with a credit card (applies to online applications only), but only at time of submission. You cannot return to your online application after you have submitted it to pay the fee. The application fee may also be paid on a bank draft or personal check drawn on a U.S. bank made payable to “University of Denver” and submitted with the packet of supplemental application materials. Applications will not be forwarded to the department for review until this fee is paid. No waivers or deferrals are allowed.
