Carolyn Elverenli, Ed.D., Lead Faculty, celveren@du.edu

Elverenli is responsible for developing and teaching 5 courses; leading the Design Team in the design, delivery, revision, and review of the curriculum; providing management and oversight for all phases of the design and development of the program; mentoring the program coordinator, staff, and adjunct faculty; advising all students; working with presenters for the Leadership Retreat and Symposium; overseeing the recruitment and selection processes; reporting to the Management Team; and building and nurturing collaborative relationships with Clayton Early Learning senior staff, Morgridge College of Education faculty, and Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation administrators.  Elverenli co-authored the Buell Early Childhood Leadership Professional Preparation grant, served as Project Coordinator during the planning phase, and is a founding member of the Design Team. 

Elverenli served as the Executive Director of the Fisher Early Learning Center from July, 2002 through March, 2006, developed and taught an early childhood leadership course at DU, and authored a funded DU public good grant entitled “Leadership Development in ECE”.  With over 9 years of experience directing quality early care and education programs that were federally supported; ie. HUD, GSA, and Supreme Court, and university supported;  ie. DU, Elverenli brings a focus on the development and implementation of ECE leadership preparation programs. Elverenli received her Masters of Education in Early Childhood Education from George Mason University, and her Doctor of Education in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education with a focus on Leadership and Early Literacy Development from The University of Northern Colorado.  Elverenli has extensive experience with diverse ethnic and sociocultural student and teaching staff populations & has guided three early care and education systems to successful NAEYC Accreditation.  Dr. Elverenli serves as the Lead Faculty for this project, bringing “real world experience” to course content and delivery.

Virginia Maloney, Co-Faculty, gmaloney@du.edu

Dr. Maloney is the Director of the new Marsico Institute for Early Learning and Literacy, as well as a faculty member in the Buell Early Childhood Leadership Program.

Dr. Virginia Maloney served as Dean of the Morgridge College of Education at the University of Denver for the last seven years. Under her leadership, the College has launched several innovative programs designed to prepare a new generation of education professionals prepared to lead change in schools and communities in the 21st century.  Previously, she was the Executive Director of the Sturm Family Foundation, a Denver-based philanthropic foundation with funding initiatives in the fields of K-12 education, higher education, affordable housing, and Jewish life.  As a member of several funding partnerships, she had the opportunity to form relationships with Denver foundations interested in education reform, the leadership of local school systems, teacher union leadership, and policy makers on the state and local level.

Before moving to Denver, Dr. Maloney worked in an executive capacity at nonprofit organizations providing education and family support services to children with disabilities and children “at risk” in Illinois and Virginia.  Beginning her career as a preschool teacher in a classroom demonstrating the inclusion of children with significant disabilities, Dr. Maloney remains a dedicated supporter of quality early childhood education for all children.

 Dr. Maloney received her B.A. from Yale University as a member of the first graduating class to include women.  She has an M.A. in Education and Human Development and a Ph.D. in Administration from the School of Public and Business Management at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.  As a doctoral student she focused her study and research on the development and implementation of public education policy.

THE CLAYTON EARLY LEARNING INSTITUTE STAFF

Lynn Andrews, Co-Faculty

Lynn Andrews, M.S., is a member of the Design Team and on the faculty of the Buell Early Childhood Leadership Program. As the Senior Director of Professional Development Services at the Clayton Early Learning Institute, she is responsible for leadership development and coaching services to community early childhood education programs seeking to improve their quality, and for oversight of the Colorado Parent Information Resource Center.

Ms. Andrews has over 30 years experience in early childhood education and primary prevention program development and administration in Colorado and Connecticut. She has developed and taught curricula on diverse topics such as outcomes-based coaching, youth violence prevention, and leadership issues such as creating effective teams, managing change and conflict, and strengthening parent involvement. As a Clayton staff member assigned to Educare Colorado, she had a lead role in developing the Qualistar Rating system and quality improvement model now being used statewide in Colorado to support children’s school readiness. Her work in community development initiatives has included establishing and coordinating regional parent leadership programs, school-community partnerships to support Kindergarten transition, and a coaching peer support network. Ms. Andrews holds a Masters of Science in School Psychology with an emphasis in early childhood from the University of Bridgeport.

Joanne Dalton, Co-Faculty

Joanne Dalton is the Professional Development Coordinator at the Clayton Early Learning Institute.  As a member of the Quality Improvement team, she provides direct support, training and technical assistance to child care providers, directors and staff in homes and centers. In addition, Joanne has joined the Institute’s Family, Friends and Neighbors project, a collaborative initiative with Clayton Early Learning, Temple Hoyne Buell and Public Broadcasting Services (PBS).

Prior to her return as an employee of  Clayton Early Learning in 2001,  Joanne has worked as a family child care home provider, preschool/kindergarten teacher,  director of a child care center, creator of two alternative schools , and trainer/educational consultant in both urban and rural settings across the United States, Puerto Rico and Bermuda.   She received a B.A. in Sociology, a B.A. in Early Childhood Education and her M.A. in Whole Learning.  Joanne also was a Field Consultant for the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation from 1987 through 2007. She remains an endorsed trainer for Infant, Toddler, Preschool and Elementary School High/Scope training.  Most importantly, Joanne is the mother of two biracial daughters who are now married and have created 4 grandchildren, ranging from 2 year to 16 years of age.  Learning with her diverse family provides inspiration and opportunities for life long learning!

Nancie Linville, Co-Faculty

Nancie Linville is a member of the Design Team and faculty for the Buell Early Leadership Program.  Linville joined Clayton Early Learning in 2004 and currently serves as the Vice President.  Linville has an extensive background in early childhood, business and product development, and technology.  Within the local Denver community, Linville participates in the Denver Early Childhood Council and chairs the Nominating Committee.

Linville’s 30 year career includes serving as the Vice President of Business Development at Educare Colorado during the initial statewide roll-out of the Qualistar Rating.  Additionally, Linville was the Director of New Business Development at the Community College of Denver where she headed the college’s effort to expand early childhood education programs and worked extensively with K-12 school districts across Colorado. Linville also was Director of Corporate Relations and Coordinator of Best Practices in Education at the Education Commission of the States. During her tenure, she worked on a local and national level to promote positive large-scale systems change in early education and public school reform. Her hands-on early childhood experience included serving as director of Russell Child Development Center, a Kansas non-profit early intervention special education organization serving 350 families. Linville earned her M.S. in Administration and Foundations at Kansas State University and her B.S. in Elementary Education and Special Education at Emporia State University.
