Admissions
How do I apply?
To apply, students must complete an online application to the Morgridge College of Education, Supplemental LIS Admissions Materials, and the Law Librarian Fellowship Application. Do I need to take the GRE?
No. The GRE is not required for the Library and Information Science program.
Is an interview required?
Yes. An interview is currently required as part of the LIS admissions process. You will be notified and given a time for an interview after your application is complete and has been reviewed. In addition to the general admissions interview, fellowship applicants will be required to complete a fellowship interview. Both interviews can be done either in-person or over the phone.
How many fellowships are available?
Thanks to a generous grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services we are offering up to 10 full-tuition fellowships for study beginning September 2009 and ending June 2011.
Do you accept part-time fellows?
No. Fellows are required to be full-time students and are expected to complete the program within the two year fellowship window (9/2009 - 6/2011).
Can I apply if I don't have a J.D.?
Yes! The Law Librarian Fellowship Program is open to all new LIS students interested in pursuing a career in law librarianship. Successful law librarians come from a variety of backgrounds, and we encourage anyone interested in law librarianship to apply.
When is the deadline?
The deadline for submitting applications is December 1st.
Financial Considerations and Program Commitments
What does the fellowship include?
The fellowship will pay full-tuition and fees for seven quarters (9/2009 - 6/2011).
Is there a stipend?
No. A stipend is not included in the fellowship.
What time commitments are associated with the fellowship?
During the first year (Fall Quarter 2009, Winter Quarter 2010, & Spring Quarter 2010) Fellows will spend 6 hours per week at the Westminster Law Library working with the library's librarians and staff. During the second year (Summer Quarter 2010, Fall Quarter 2010, Winter Quarter 2011, and Spring Quarter 2011) Fellows will spend 12 hours per week at the Westminster Law Library working with the Rural and Small Practice Attorney Support Center providing legal reference and research for the Centers clients.
Can students work full-time while taking classes in the LIS program?
Yes. The LIS program is designed for the working professional. Classes are generally offered once a week, with sessions from 4 p.m. to 6:25 p.m. or 7 p.m. to 9:25 p.m.
General Information
Is the program accredited?
Yes. The LIS program has been accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) since 2004. Our next site visit will be in 2011.
What is the curriculum for the law specialization?
Fellows will earn an MLIS degree with a law specialization upon completion of the 58 quarter- hour program. In addition to the required core classes, Fellows are required to take LIS 4750 Legal Research I, LIS 4751 Legal Research II, and LIS 4374 Legal Reference & Resources. Fellows are strongly encouraged to take LIS 4756 Legal Databases Research, LIS 4204 Legal Issues in Information Organizations, and LIS 4362 Government Publications.

An excellent source of information is the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) website, www.aallnet.org. Can you help me find housing?
Graduate students have the choice to live on or off the University of Denver campus. Information regarding on-campus housing can be found at http://slife.du.edu/housing/gliving.html and includes information about building options, dining plans, parking, etc. Off-campus housing information can be found at http://www.du.edu/och/ and includes links to nearby apartment complexes as well as information about how to find roommates, transportation, childcare, banks, etc. Once you confirm you are coming to DU, you can also use our LIS student listserv to find other students who may be looking for a roommate.
