Schedule:

Winter and Spring Quarters, 15 hrs /wk., M-F

Duties:

The Graduate Assistantship for the Marsico Institute is a half time GTA position beginning in December 2008 or January 2009.  This position requires approximately 15 hours of work per week, between the hours of 10am – 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.  Occasional hours in the evening may be required when special events are planned. Work hours can be arranged flexibly to accommodate the student’s schedule.  The position will provide support for the research and community outreach projects underway through the Marsico Institute for Early Learning and Literacy, including the development of a web-based early childhood information clearinghouse and the preparation of research and policy briefs and grant proposals.  The Institute also will be sponsoring several community events in the coming months, which may require the selected student to assist with event planning and logistics.


We are seeking a student with strong skills in information organization and management, website development, and writing.  Must be proficient with basic word processing software and Excel.  Experience or interest in the field of Early Childhood is a plus, but not required for this position.


The Marsico Institute for Early Learning and Literacy:

The Marsico Institute is a new program at the Morgridge College of Education established in the Fall of 2008.  The mission of the Marsico Institute is to improve early learning environments for very young children, birth to age 8, to ensure that children have the supports necessary to achieve their individual developmental potential.  With an emphasis on addressing the needs of children and families challenged by poverty, language differences, and/or disabilities, the Marsico Institute conducts research, provides open access to information on best practices, and links University of Denver resources with those of community partners to stimulate innovation and address critical issues of policy and practice.  Our offices are located at 2190 S. High Street between Craig Hall and Nelson Hall.

Qualifications:

Admitted into a traditional degree program in the Morgridge College of Education and in good academic standing.  Must be a full-time student enrolled in a minimum of 8 credit hours per quarter.

Job Description:

This 10 hour per week position provides administrative support for the Associate Dean in the Morgridge College of Education.  Routine responsibilities will include conducting higher education research; data collection, entry, and analysis; various other administrative tasks that might include setting up meetings, creating documents in Word and Excel, copying, filing, typing, etc.  Some of the projects might include working on a new faculty evaluation form, conducting research on new teaching/learning methods, and faculty development activities. It is expected that the candidate will be able to work independently and produce required work in a timely fashion. Attention to details is a must. Support to other aspects of the COE will also be required over the course of the academic year.  .

Job Description:

This position reports to the Director of the Center for Innovative and Talented Youth. The Work Study student works collaboratively with the entire Center staff to serve acceleration and enrichment programs for high interest and/or high ability youth in a seven-state region. The position requires the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines, excellent communication skills with high advocacy families (particularly on the phone), ability to think and solve problems quickly and with composure, and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. Most of this work is done via phone, mail, and data entry. Position follows the DU staff calendar within reason.

• Assist in client relations, including school directors and principals, regional advocacy groups, advisory boards, gifted and talented coordinators, counselors, and program coordinators, community groups, higher education representatives, and families and supporters of regional youth qualifying for programming.

• Assist with community outreach initiatives, coordinate mailings, applications, admissions and resource packets, and training materials, and attend and assist in management of program events and meetings. These events will include some weekend and evening work and are compressed at certain times of year.

• Assist with programs management and coordination of materials, resources, staff and clients, and facilities.

• Participate in and manage trainings for various programs throughout the year.

Qualifications:

Must be admitted into a traditional degree program at the University of Denver and be enrolled in a minimum of 4 credit hours per quarter. Candidates must possess a commitment to diversity and youth programming, understand and have a genuine interest and satisfaction in working with the unique population serviced by the Center, and possess excellent organizational, planning, interpersonal and communications skills. The ability to work independently and with a team, as well as to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines is essential. Preferred criteria include experience working with programming for high interest and/or high ability youth, working with instructional and/or residential staff, and handling program maintenance or management.

Job Description:

The Work-Study positions for Community Engagement in the Morgridge College of Education involve programmatic and research support for the MCE/Highline Partnership

Qualifications:

Students should be interested in participating in research and programming partnership with a DPS charter school; have a commitment to social justice; and speak Spanish (although this is not essential). Ideal candidates will have excellent organizational skills and experience in urban schools and/or community organizations. In addition they should possess one or more of the following skill sets associated with these positions.

  • Ability to work with professors to identifying DU faculty and students who are interested in undertaking action research and/or community-based research at Highline Academy
  • Ability to identify local, state, and national funding sources that fund university-school partnerships.
  • Skills in research design, data collection, and analysis in order to work with DU’s Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL) on assessment of (1) DU student learning in MCE and CCESL partnerships with local schools; and/or (2) the impact of CCESL and MCE partnerships on school and community partners.
  • Skills in K-12 curriculum development and implementation.
  • Interest in issues relating to professional development, school climate, classroom instruction, student behavior, and parent engagement.
  • Ability to plan and organize a College Access Day in which Highline Academy students and their parents visit DU for a day of college orientation activities.
  • Experience with library services, including providing general assistance to students, teachers, and other library users; paging and reshelving materials; preparing photocopies of materials; monitoring the Reference Desk and the distribution and return of items; overseeing patron use of materials and ensurng all library security rules are enforced; acquainting and assisting readers with library holdings and policies of collection use; assisting patrons with the use of the public and online catalogues; providing reference assistance; maintenance of the collection and equipment; performing routine clerical duties; and undertaking special projects as assigned.
  • Interest in coordinating DU and MCE student volunteer activities at Highline Academy.

Computer Lab Assistant for the Morgridge College of Education

Job Description:

The Work-Study position for the Computer Lab/Technology Student Assistant position in the Morgridge College of Education requires approximately 10 - 15 hours of work per week, depending on the scheduling of classes in the MCE Computer Labs and student class schedules.  Primary duties involve closing and organizing the lab at the end of the day and troubleshooting simple technology issues in the lab and for faculty, students, and staff.  Troubleshooting may include printer jams, replacing toner, assisting with basic computer skills (flash drives, diskettes, etc.) or questions about Microsoft Office.  This position also assists in the checking in and out of equipment.  Duties vary depending on the scheduling of the lab and the required work hours will vary by quarter, but are always in the evenings.  Additional special projects may be assigned by the Assistant Director of Traditional Programs, the Technology Coordinator, or the Program Assistants.

Qualifications:

Must be admitted into a traditional degree program in the Morgridge College of Education and be a part-time student enrolled in a minimum of 4 credit hours per quarter. Must have a FAFSA on file and qualify for work study funds to be considered. Ideal candidates will have experience working with technology.
