FALL 2013 COMPREHENSIVE AND QUALIFYING EXAM REGISTRATION  (Registration Deadline: September 01, 2013)

Registration Deadlines

The registration deadline for Fall 2013 exams is September 01, 2013.

Use Of Computers

The computers available have Microsoft Word as the only word processor. No other materials are allowed in the testing room. NOTE: On exam day, pens, blank paper, a desk copy of the standard English dictionary, and a thesaurus will be provided in the examination room. No other reference materials may be used.

Fees

Starting Fall 2011, fees are no longer required for exam registration.

Exam Preparation

Examinations are prepared by at least two faculty in the student's program.

Exam Evaluation

Unless otherwise indicated on the examination, readers of examinations consider the following criteria in evaluating exams: degree of intellectual power shown, evidence of background of factual information, extent to which the discussion was directed to the essential points, and ability to express in clear and concise language.

Written examinations are assigned a code number so that readers do not have the students' names. They are usually scored by at least two readers who must agree on the score. If the readers are unable to agree on a score, the program will assign an additional reader. The additional reader scores the examination without knowing the scores given by the primary readers, and the majority score is finally assigned to the exam. Students may appeal exam evaluations using the Appeal Procedure for Graduate Student Grievance.

Test-Out Exams

Doctoral students may attempt to test-out of the following required courses:

RMS 4910 Introductory Statistics                                                  5 credit hrs

RMS 4920 Educational Measurement                                            3 credit hrs

RMS 4930 Empirical Research Methods                                       3 credit hrs

RMS 4951 Introduction to Qualitative Research                         4 credit hrs

Contact the instructor for the course you wish to test-out. In 2011-2012, contact Kathy Green for RMS 4910, 4920, and 4930 and Nick Cutforth for RMS 4951 to arrange the exam. Exams are scheduled on a case-by-case basis.  All exams are closed book and no notes, materials, or other persons may be used or consulted during the exam. You will be notified via email within 2-4 weeks of the results. IF you successfully test-out, please forward your email notice to the Office of Academic Services at oas@du.edu. It is the student’s responsibility to notify OAS.

If you score above 80%, you will not be required to take the course. You may retake the test once. The credit hours associated with the class you successfully test out of should be utilized for other, more advanced research courses. Please note that you are still required to complete at least 28 hours of research credits [covering the 17 introductory credit hours, a minimum of 8 intermediate credit hours, and a minimum of 3 advanced level credit hours]. You should consult with the instructor of the course you wish to waive/test out of if you have any questions or need advice about whether or not you should take the course or test out.
