Center for Community Engagement & Service Learning: Student Section

Winter Interterm:
Juarez, Mexico

 

The Alternative Break in Juarez, Mexico is the latest offering from DU’s Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. Students will spend 12 days in a variety of activities:

  • Living with a Mexican family

  • Building a home with a local nonprofit organization

  • Speaking with experts about immigration issues

  • Learning about life in a border city

  • Touring the magical Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico

Sunday, November 27

Depart from Denver at 8:00 am

Arrive in El Paso

Monday, November 28

Cross into Mexico

Orientation on homebuilding

Settle into homestays

Tuesday, November 29 – Friday, December 2

Homebuilding project in the San Rafael community

Saturday, December 3

Weekend Excursions:

  • Guided tour of Juarez from Mexican students
  • Group Meal
  • Visit to a Juarez Market

Sunday, December 4:

  • Volunteer with PARS in local mental hospital

Monday, December 5-Tuesday, December 6:

  • Service projects in Bethel Orphanage

Wednesday, December 7

  • Cross back into Texas
  • Lectures from professors at University of Texas at El Paso

Thursday, December 8

  • Travel to Carslbad Caverns National Park
  • Tour of Carlsbad Caverns

Friday, December 9

  • Travel to Denver – arrive in Denver at 6:00 p.m.
