Public Achievement (PA) is a youth initiative that engages young people in experience-based civic education. Its goal is to create a more expansive notion of politics, democracy and citizenship by empowering individuals as active decision-makers and agents of public change.
Here at DU, we partner with Front Range Earth Force, a non-profit organization, to implement Public Achievement within Denver Public Schools. Over the past three years, our primary focus was to engage young people at Cole Middle School through an experiential civic education, as part of the school’s reform efforts.
After three successful years at Cole Middle School, a change in administration has caused us to move across town to Bryant-Webster K-8 school. At Bryant-Webster, DU students serve as adult facilitators, or Coaches, for middle school youth involved with service learning projects. Through these projects, DU Coaches help the middle school youth address social issues affecting their community.
