Tips for Contacting Agencies

1. Ask to speak with the Volunteer Coordinator
When you are calling an agency, ask to speak with the volunteer coordinator. This is the person who will be able to answer your questions about the agency’s volunteer opportunities.

2. Introduce yourself and your interest in the agency
Tell the volunteer coordinator you are a DU student and explain why you are interested in their agency. Be sure to let them know if you are a service-learning student or a community work-study so they can accommodate your needs.

3. Ask about volunteer duties and responsibilities
If this is your first time volunteering with this agency, ask questions to get a feel for what it would be like to volunteer. Ask about volunteer duties and responsibilities, supplies you will need to bring, and proper attire to be worn. Make sure that this agency is a good fit for you and one where you’ll have an enjoyable experience. Also, ask about safety and health concerns (is there a required background check or any necessary vaccinations if working in a health related arena?)

4. Have preferred days and times in mind
Have your schedule available so you will know which days and times would work best for you. Try to be as flexible as you can with your schedule to make it easier for the agency to place you. Ask if there are any required orientation or training sessions.
