Department of Engineering

With the considerations of hardware, software, and lab workbench space, the Department of Engineering recommends ALL incoming Engineering students to purchase the Dell Latitude D430 model.

Required:

  • Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP2, Windows Vista Business 32 bit, or Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit (XP Home and Vista Home are NOT allowed - manufacturers will NOT uphold warranties for XP Home systems if XP Professional is installed after the purchase.  If you already have a laptop with Windows XP Professional, it is not recommended upgrading to Windows Vista at this time.

  • Software: Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007 Professional (DU Bookstore sells for $99)

  • Processor Architecture: Intel® Core Duo® Processor, Intel® Pentium® M Processor or Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor (Celeron, AMD and Athlon processors are NOT allowed)

  • Processor Speed: 1.33 Ghz

  • Memory: 1024 MB (1GB) RAM for XP, 2048 MB (2GB)RAM for Vista

  • Hard Drive: 60 GB for XP, 80 GB for Vista

  • Optical Storage Drive: 24X (DVD/CDRW/DVD-RW Optional)

  • I/O Ports: USB Port is required

  • Network Card: Integrated 10/100 Mbps

  • Warranty: 4 year parts and labor (on-site and accidental care recommended)

  • Ethernet cable: These are required for wired connections on campus. They can be bought at the bookstore. Please bring your cable to your laptop configuration session during orientation.

Optional:

  • Wireless integrated 802.11 b/g standard.

  • Modem 56k

  • USB Flash Memory Storage Devices are strongly recommended
