Advising & Tutoring
Advising
At the beginning of each advising period, the student's advisor receives a Course Request Form for each advisee. This has the "Alternate PIN," without which the student may not register. Each student obtains this from the advisor in order to pre-register for the following quarter. These materials do not come to the Department of Engineering unless the student is coded as an Engineering major (ENCO, ENEE, ENGR, ENME, or ENGE). If yours is not one of these, be sure to contact an engineering advisor.
First-Year students should contact their Mentors. If you are not coded as an Engineering student, then it is essential that you contact an Engineering advisor for proper advice, as our curricula are very specific and sequential. (If you took "The Profession of Engineering" as your UDCC 1000, then you will automatically have an engineering advisor.) Transfer students also need to consult an Engineering advisor before registering for courses in order to ensure proper placement.
Upon completion of the first year engineering curricula, students are assigned to an advisor who has them in an engineering course during the second year. This is the year in which the student should explore the engineering opportunities available, and make a decision on which engineering discipline best fits his or her individual interests and abilities.
At the end of the second year, once the decision on a specific program (BSCPE, BSE, BSEE, BSME) has been made, an advisor from that program will be assigned. This assignment will determine the student's advisor for the remainder of the program.
Students admitted into the coordinated programs with the Daniels College of Business will have a co-advisor from DCB. They will also have an advisor in engineering who maintains contact with DCB and keeps abreast of both sets of requirements. Currently the engineering advisor is Dan Armentrout.
Students planning on participating in Study Abroad under the CGS program or any Study Abroad program should also contact the engineering advisor for this program. Currently the engineering advisor is Dan Armentrout.
A student should feel free to contact the advisor throughout the year to discuss any areas of interest or concern. That is what an advisor is for. We pride ourselves on having one of the best academic advising systems at the University of Denver.
