Needed forms are available from the Office of the Registrar. These include Change of Major forms, Removal of Incomplete forms, and several others. There is other useful information on the Registrar's site, which is not the easiest one to find if you do not know what you are looking for.

Study Abroad

Petitions for the CGS program and applications to Study Abroad:

  1. If you not eligible automatically for the CGS program, then you may petition to be accepted to it. The eligibility form for this petition is availbe from the CGS site. Petitions should be filed prior to the beginning of Winter Quarter, and preferably sooner.
  2. If you plan to study abroad, then you must contact the Study Abroad Office (and fill out the application) by the dates required. Note that this is in addition to any petition for CGS you have filed. Further requirements and information should be obtained from the Study Abroad Office. Also visit the Study Abroad Office site for further information. Note that you will need your advisor's approval of your study plan as well. The Engineering advisor for Study Abroad is E. R. Tuttle.

You are well-advised to start this process no later than the 3rd or 4th week of the Autumn quarter of your Junior year. It takes time to find the institution that matches your aspirations, and to verify that the courses you may require are offered in the proper term. Final applications to some institutions are required as early as January for the following Autumn.

Special Requirements for the Coordinated Engineering/MBA Programs

Prior to entering the fourth year of study, potential Eng/MBA students must take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), then apply and be admitted to the Graduate School of the Daniels College of Business. Generally, a minimum score of at least 590 on the GMAT is required for admission, as well as a 3.00+ grade point average over the previous two years of study. It is strongly recommended that students take the GMAT and apply in the third year prior to the early admission date given by the Daniels College of Business to assure admission for the following fall. An interview is also required. An orientation, testing, and training session is required just prior to entrance into the MBA Program. For students entering in the Autumn Quarter, this session occurs just preceding the Autumn Quarter. Complete information on application may be found at the Daniels Admission site.

The MBA requires 72 credit hours; 56 credits of which are required MBA courses. The remaining 16 credits are electives, no more than four credits of which may be at the 3000 level. At least 12 credits of these electives are to be taken from 4000 level courses approved by the Graduate School of the Daniels College of Business. Each undergraduate engineering program contains at least four 3000 level credits aside from the senior design project. Note that a form approving these 3000 level credits is sent to the Graduate School of the Daniels College of Business toward the end of the degree program. The listed curricula assume that the student is using four credits of engineering courses toward the 16 elective credits required. All elective credits must be in courses which could be used toward a graduate degree. No more than 10 credits may be in Independent Study. The degrees are awarded concurrently upon completion of the requirements for both.

As these programs must meet the standards of two different accrediting agencies, there may be changes made to the curricula. Students must check with advisors in both Engineering and the Graduate School of the Daniels College of Business during preregistration periods to ensure that they are taking the required courses for both degrees.

Seniors:

There are several things you must do in a timely manner this year.

1) Apply for graduation.

(If you are planning on graduating in June, then there is an application for graduation deadline.) The earlier in the year you do this, the sooner the Registrar's Office will be able to send you a status sheet. This is highly recommended. The application for graduation available from the Registrar's site.

2) Take the FE exam.

The FE exam is offered twice a year, once in October, and once in April. Completed applications for it are required approximately 6 weeks prior to the exam date. These are available only from the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Student application forms are posted typically in July for the October exam, and in late January or February for the April exam. Because DU starts late in the Fall, the completed applications for the October exam are usually due back to the State Board either before Autumn Quarter starts, or about the first day of classes. These have to be submitted through Dr. Hamstad, as our liaison with the State Board. So - check the website noted above during the summer, and watch your e-mail for information. Remember: If you haven't taken this exam, the national accreditation board will not allow DU to offer you graduation.

3) Major Approval.

In the middle of the quarter at the end of which you have applied to graduate, a Major Approval form is sent to the Department. At that time, the department checks to see that all your degree requirements are satisfied, those that have not been completed are noted, and the grades you must obtain in each are marked on the form. Missing courses or requirements are also noted. This form is returned to the Registrar, and is used at the end of the quarter to determine whether you have completed the requirements of your degree, once all grades are in. The individual who verifies the Major Approval and submits the forms to the Registrar is Dr. E. R. Tuttle.
