Honor Societies

Engineering students are eligible for a number of honor societies at the University, including: Golden Key (general), Pi Mu Epsilon (mathematics), Sigma Pi Sigma (Physics), Alpha Lambda Delta (First-Year students). They are also considered for election to DU's prestigious Mortar Board, awarded to Third-Year students on the basis of scholarship, leadership and service. In the last 10 years, nearly 20 engineering students have been elected to this highly exclusive group.

Some students who have shown exceptional ability and interest in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences may also be considered for election to Phi Beta Kappa (liberal arts and sciences). In the last 10 years, ten of our Engineering students have been elected to Phi Beta Kappa. All of these were highly involved in research, in addition to being outstanding scholars with broad interests. You can find more information about these and other exceptional students elsewhere on this Web site.

Awards

Over the past decade students in the Departments of Engineering have been highly acclaimed. Our school is one of the smaller at DU, but our students have received a disproportionately large share of the University's awards and honors.

The University of Denver participates in Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges , and students are eligible for selection upon nomination. The criteria for this honor are academic achievement, DU involvement, and community service, usually in approximately equal amounts. In the last 10 years, over 25 DU engineers have been selected for this honor, many in both their Junior and Senior years of eligibility.

The University annually gives awards for the Outstanding Man and Outstanding Woman from each undergraduate class. An additional four or five Distinguished Men and Women are selected from the senior class. These are based upon academic achievement, contributions to the University and community service. Students are eligible for consideration for these upon nomination. In the last 10 years, we are proud to have had three Outstanding Senior Men or Women, three Outstanding Junior Men or Women, four Outstanding Sophomore Men or Women, and five Outstanding First-Year Men or Women. In addition, we have also had nine students selected as Senior Distinguished Men or Women.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs annually gives one or two awards to undergraduates who have been outstanding, both academically, and through service to expanding cultural awareness on the DU campus and in the community. Four engineering students have been selected for this award since 1994.

Students who are considered the embodiment of what DU stands for are considered for Pioneer Awards. Many consider a Pioneer Award to be the most prestigious award a DU student can receive. Since 1994, three engineering students have received this award.

Scholarships - External

Engineering students with excellent academic records have also won numerous external scholarships from local, regional, and national engineering societies and organizations, among them ASME, SAMPE, SWE, AEE, ASHRAE, the National Hispanic Foundation, and ACEC.

Departmental Awards

The Department annually gives awards to graduating students for academic excellence in engineering and for service to the Department.

Degrees with Honors

The University of Denver awards baccalaureate degrees with honors. These are designated as cum laude (minimum DU GPA 3.75), magna cum laude (minimum DU GPA 3.85), and summa cum laude (minimum DU GPA 3.95). A thesis is required for the designation of summa cum laude, and an engineering student must take ENGR 3314, ENGR 3324 (Honors Thesis I, II) in order to qualify for this designation. Further requirements on numbers of hours taken at the University of Denver for each of these designations may be found in the University Bulletin. These designations appear on the diploma and on the final transcript.
